This means that subtle characterisation or even major plot elements are completely forgotten.
Imagine an issue of I Hate Fairyland where Gert suddenly picked up a wacky catchphrase that she said whenever she murdered someone, spent half the issue having lighthearted banter with Larry and then teamed up with the slug guy from the first issue to beat up the moon.
That's what reading a Bendis comic is like if you've been following the character under a different writer.
