What we need is an OP format and set title like the "How's your Webcomic" threads. The past three threads didn't really include set words in their titles.

The thing with the eyes is that I didn't want too much uncanny conflict between cartoony and realistic. I did draw basic pupil details but there was just too much room for uncanny and I didn't want to go there at all.

Well what do you purpose then? I'll draw some up if anyone has any ideas.

Anyhow, here's some progress on the animations I've been working on to see how well those model sheets I posted before work. The mouth here is just a very early placeholder, the background needs some touch ups and I need to give the torso more motion but I'm nearing completion when it comes to the basic materials I'll be working with. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated but keep in mind the videos these animations are for will be produced by myself on a bi-monthly basis so I need to keep them somewhat simple.

Whoops, forgot my name in that post but here's some more content. The first background is the one I had when I first started posting in these threads only 5 months ago. The bottom is the one I'm using now after all the advice I've been given. I'm pretty amazed at how appallingly bad my art from only a few months ago looks now after improving this much but I suppose it's a good display of how much your art can improve just from sharing it.

The coloring itself looks good, though you should consider limiting yourself to one king of lighting per image- the shadows are sharp and more cell shaded, which makes the blurred highlight on the nose look off. Also, I would bring the bottom of the ribcage on the front away from the body's center, not towards it.

I really love the stylization here. The linework is nice and clean and it has a very striking look to it. If I had to pick something to criticize though it'd be that the highlights on the clothing look off, maybe try making due with 2 highlight colors instead of three or mess around with some gradients. Another is that her chest around the collarbone area is jutting out in kind of a weird way. Though other than that I really like it.

Thank you guys for the input. I think I'll at least fix her color bone since that has been bothering me as well. I was just trying to experiment with color so I kinda combined soft highlights with hard shadow. I still need to figure stuff out.

I've been embarking on a interesting mission the past few months. Along with practicing my art, I've been recording all the characters I have come up with for this comic book idea so I don't forget them. I don't know if the idea is really all that, but I just feel it in my gut that they should be preserved for a later date when I can properly do them justice.

I've gone through about 20 and I've got a good 25 or so left in me. Even though they all look terrible and I'm hastily drawing them out, it's nice to see a physical representation of the idea. Once I do this, I can devote myself wholly to practicing and not have to worry about coming up with a cool idea and then forgetting it.

Anywho, these are my main 5. I'm going more function over form right now.

Parts are uncompleted because I invested resources into places I ended up scrapping (coloring to be exact) and I was dead tired. I was really dissatisfied with this one and looking to get some insight.

Someone told me to leave in my construction lines but I left them out because to me they just make things seem messier.

Not saying it's not necessary, your stuff comes out great. Do you have a page/tumblr? But I feel I see people make super effortless line art that replicates some great styles pretty well. Although if I go with easy smooth lines over my sketches I find they come out too thick, and if I try to go for smaller brushes I end up with lines that are way too uniform.

I feel the only true way to fix this for me is to work in macro or just not bother with lineart but it's pretty eh.

I realise now I really need to sort out the line thickness, i.e. thick lines for the outline, thinner lines for the details. Also learn to draw circles better.

Well this is me trying to tackle the learning curve of lineart like this. For awhile, lineart was my weakest aspect. This thread is literally the first compliment I've gotten solely to it in ever. It's usually just "Your colors are awesome" which, y'know. Is a great compliment. But that was the main one for a long long time. It had me paranoid about my lines.

I'M RAMBLING.

My main point is, this will get quicker the more I do it, so don't worry about me, or you.

Got some gray markers on sale and was doing some sketches with them. The brush tip on these is kind of weird. Most markers I've had just have a chisel tip.

What are your interests?

Have you thought up any stories?

Any characters?

Who is an artist that you admire?

Ask yourself these things, and make something. A doodle, a sketch. If you're having trouble with something specific, zero in on it- don't ignore it. Use reference. Try new artstyles, new techniques - mix things up so it doesn't get boring, and so you can find what works.

And I know from personal experience that it's not the answer you're looking for, but it works- do it and do a whole lot of it.

Step two: Look at what you've drawn, think about what you could do better.

Step three: draw what you feel you're weakest on.

Really it's just drawing to begin with, the details all depend on what you're doing.

However if you're doing people, try drawing from photos or life. Quickposes and other sites can give you poses.

Inked this up on lunch today. Used a Pigma brush pen instead of my usual go-to, so the hair falls a little flat. Also a bit more jittery than I'd like, but I'm working on it (I'd also like to blame the textured paper for some of that).
Overall pretty OK with how it came out.

you've got very scratchy lines, focus on drawing with your shoulder/elbow and not your wrist, use your whole arm. it's awkward but you will get used to it and it feels much better

well you can use your wrist for smaller details i suppose, but even then you can actually draw everything through your whole shoulder/arm. takes practice though, so just ease into it.

How do I ease my mind to draw freely? It seems that in the last year, every time I try to draw I'll do well for a bit, then begin to grow irritated, either by lack of progress or some difficulty in the drawing process. Then I get even angrier that I can't just draw, and I end up walking away to do something else.

Do you guys have any methods you use to get yourselves into the right frame of mind for art? Any drugs that might help? Music?

Please help, I'm desperate here. Art is my life.

In images this small mostly fairly standard felt tips. For bolder lines I use the Sharpie fabric pens 'Sharpie Stained' I really like brush tip. A white artline poster marker for white ink and Pentel touch sign pen is just generally my favorite all round inking pen. I carry them with me eveywhere and find them really easy to use for a fairly professional looking ink job.

I've been working on trying to get the little unfinished pattern on the hand to look as if it goes with the overall shape. The rounded nature of it is giving me problems. Does anyone have some tips on bending the pattern to fit that kind of bowl shape? I have no idea if I'm saying that right.

I've also just noticed that the background hand doesn't seem to have the same shape as the one in the foreground.

You might be suffering from burnout. Have you been too stressed while drawing? I'd recommend taking a break for a bit.

You could also just, doodle, a lot. Drawing anything without caring how it looks.

Well if Churchill could fight a war and do painting/writing on the side, I can manage in peacetime. Also it's just a great scene.

However, I'd say take a break, try going out for a walk or experimenting with a different style.

True, but Churchill was made of firmer stuff. I've always had anxiety issues and stress easily over the smallest stuff. I wish I could smoke weed to calm down like everyone else, but it just makes me freak out or fall asleep, and alcohol can go either way in mellowing me or making me even angrier.

I take walks pretty much every day, though. Guess I just need to put art on hold and get my life issues resolved first.

Why don't you try making a planning session every week or in the evening before going to bed? Write down what you need to do, set hours of the day aside for those tasks, and the times for leisure. Create a balance, set some time to develop your mind by reading a new book every week. Everyone is different but personally I find setting goals, even small goals, and accomplishing them helps a great deal.

Also, finally fixed this.
