Even though a Sicilian character with mob connections makes perfect sense.

It's all in the presentation. Let's compare Batman's origin to Spider-Man's. Both are similar but have different presentation, which makes both unique.
It's not just 'My parents are dead'. It's 'My parents were shot in an alley after we had just seen Zorro'. They play up that trauma, that very distinct memory. It's like when you get in a car crash that almost kills you and you're suddenly bothered by the smell of gasoline.
If it's just 'Someone I love died and I am now angry'? Sure. Boring.
But you're oversimplifying things. You're not paying attention to all the details.
