Haven't read it all in a long while, but from what I can tell:
First 50 issues or more comedic, filled with puns and jokes and stuff you'd be familiar with seeing in the cartoons, then it gets "serious", with attempts to have storylines and arcs, adding some stuff from the games while having its own unique spin to it.
A whole bunch of crazy, stupid shit happens, and it objectively gets worse. Two main writers and a lazy editor adds so much different shit to the world that it sort of fucks itself in the ass over what's important, what's not, and where the focus should be. It's just a clusterfuck, and for the longest time the comic's in a sort of "dark age".
Then it picks the fuck up pretty quickly after years of that thanks to a new writer. It's still a clusterfuck, but it's sort of a fun clusterfuck, and I think it's from 150 and onward that the comic just becomes a rollercoaster of fun.
Then in the middle of a big story arc, where there's a shit ton of shit going down, a lawsuit causes them to literally reset the universe, making quite a bit of the old comics defunct and heading into a newer world, that's more closer to the games and less "fanfictiony". So far, that's been alright, with some really good bits here and there and some boring bits elsewhere, but that's just me.
This creates an opportunity for you: Read the whole series, to witness for yourself just how crazy it actually got, or read from the nu252 reboot, which creates a perfectly fine cut off, and starts with the Mega Man and Sonic crossover.
Either way, I would suggest reading the comics if you have even the slightest interest in them. They're easy to find online, and they're actually kind of nice. It's pretty childish, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
TL;DR: Yeah, read them. It's got some cool ideas thrown around.
