The thing is, most cartoon characters who become victims of this trope are unsatisfied with their friends but for some reason keep hanging out with them (probably because they lack any choice). They are lonely and want to fit in any company they can find but for some reason or another they aren't qualified for a suitable circle of friends. So when they get an opportunity to move up in the world, they take it and flip their old buddies but then, of course, status quo prevails and everything goes back to normal.
I mean, that just seems reasonable. If you have any other theories about why characters would act like that, I'd love to hear them.
