>The Innsmouth TheoryWhen Homeworld came to Earth they decided to hold experiments on human beings, experiments concerning merging gem shards with human beings for the purpose of creating a new breed of super soldier or a purely expendable kind they can throw at things for diversionary purposes.
The results were highly undesirable, horribly deformed freaks of nature, malformed beings composed of crystal and flesh that migrated underground to avoid persecution from both Homeworld and human beings, coming onto the surface only for the purpose of retrieving food, clothing and other supplies. Hundreds of feet in tunnels lay deep underneath the Kindergarten, the mutants live in a slightly civilized community, they get married, they breed and they have their own religion concerning Steven as a messiah. The Crystal Gems' first and last interaction with the failed hybrids concerned Steven getting kidnapped by some of them and brought underground to be raised as their messiah, since then, the Gems have grown even more distant from the Kindergarten which they operate in all but Amethyst who still sees the Kindergarten as her home and also sees the failed experiments as kin of some sorts.
The deformed sub-race bind their time to meet with Steven again as they believe he will lead them to a promised land and destroy those who have brought upon their suffering (Homeworld).
