It does well enough on it's own but some of the jokes flew over my head because I saw this re-aired on the wb and like you, never watched the critic to know it was a show. Like when Bart says >I REALLY love you show man, everyone should watch it>ew, I suddenly feel dirty
At best I thought it was an in universe reference to the show Jay Sherman was on when he interviewed Rainer Wolfcastle. Not an actual show.
Or when briefly before when Bart is watching tv and you hear >Up next the Flintstones meet the Jetsons
and Bart says>I smell another cheesy cartoon cross-over
But being able to stand up without relying on the fact that it was a cross-over was one of the great things about the Simpsons.
