>>78819490Zootopia really is a utopia. It seems to me that it'd take several miracles of biology, economics, politics, and god knows what else for such a society to develop. I'd love to see some science fiction that investigates this kind of world, but I kind of suspect that if you don't resort to magic or something similar, then multispecies societies that struggle to coexist peacefully become more plausible to write about, or perhaps just more interesting. Or maybe I'm not being imaginative enough. If anyone has any recommendations I'd love to hear them.
>>78820040Well, utopias are, by definition, perfect. And utopias have never existed, so it doesn't really make sense to say they usually fail. But certainly when people write about utopias they like to think about why they wouldn't end up working, or why they wouldn't be so great after all, or how humans would need to change to achieve utopia, or why we'd end up in dystopia if we tried. And reading about dystopias, or trying to poke holes in utopias, has probably been historically more interesting than uncritically accepting perfect fantasy worlds.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if Zootopia manages to address these issues with any seriousness. And if not, hey, I'm here for the cute animal people and I'm prepared to uncritically accept their perfect fantasy world if that's what it takes.
