There's no longer a bunch of space knight wizards running around constantly alert for the evil version of the space knight wizards. Come the original trilogy Vader IS the only force user anyone would know about and set the standard. There's no reason to assume that Vader's master (who is also the master of everyone else) is also an evil wizard. The more logical idea would be that Vader is simply an evil space wizard following the empire and is an anomaly.
That's a big thing I didn't like about the prequels and old EU. The originals point out how the dark side isn't any stronger than the "good" Jedi path so you were always under the impression that the Jedi order was relativity small to have Vader be instrumental in destroying it and that the emperor as an individual was just really good at manipulating people into creating his empire.
But then come the prequels Palpatine is able to mastermind a retarded plan that outwits the entire jedi order of a fuck ton of dudes and in the EU any Sith lord is honestly the equal of a bunch of fucking Jedi in terms of what they can get done.
