Think of it this way: pretend you live in a world where everything popular is ponies, except for the occasional capeshit. You're okay with ponies but you really like it when an artist takes some pony sci-fi or pony action and turns it into capeshit because you just don't see capeshit that often. How would it make you feel if some new capeshit you like comes out and you go online and people have turned the characters into ponies? At best, you ignore it, but a lot of people will feel indignant because, you know, this was one of the few times they might have been able to connect to something that was popular with the mainstream... But the mainstream won't accept it (or you) unless it's run through a pony filter.
So it's not just the face value, it's kind of the implications of what people are thinking when they do this kind of thing.
