The production to broadcast schedule of American Dad was a mess for the first seven production seasons. By Season 9 (or season 8, if you're using the old order - Let's just say the 2012-2013 season) every single episode was a holdover from the previous production season. So, the show actually went on a production hiatus. During that time, a lot of the old writers and directors moved on to different projects, so new ones had to be hired.
Then, when the show moved over to TBS, even more of the older writers and directors left and now we're stuck with the ones we have now. The only writer on the show who's been around since Season 1 is Brian Boyle, who's filling in Mike Barker's old executive producer position.
