Gumball is twelve and he has a girlfriend. I don't know about you guys, but I don't think that was all that common when I was a kid.
Honestly, if I could wish for one thing from the show, it would be continuity. If the show featured the characters aging (and the tone aging with it, although only slightly) then it could maintain its potential for serious longevity. The status quo needs to change. I know in "The Kids' this was established as unchanging, but I want that paradigm uprooted. They should go up in grade, grow up and maybe feature the series finale with them going off to high school.
