The charm of the wimpy kid books is how it appears to be a hand-drawn diary by a middle school child.
The original movies adapted this well by just casting kids, and then depicts the book drawings as how Greg illustrates things
But then for this movie they took the art-style and created weird 3D CG homunculus man looking freaks

I agree. It was clear in the original books and the original movies that this was Greg's art style as a middle school kid.

They probably thought doing it in the hand drawn monochrome art style would look too boring and be a risk.
And Disney thought slapping CG in it would give kids attention right away.
