I like The Joker being how he was when he first appeared: a grim. wraith-like gangland boss who brings crime and death all over Gotham, and who challenges the police, the mob, and Batman to stop him.

Nowadays he's like a Tim Curry Pennywise rip-off.

I really liked Nicholson in that scene just right before he revealed his face to his boss. After that he just overdid it on the clownish behavior imo.

I like Ledger's Joker a lot because he's actually a gangster in TDK.

I guess what it is is that The Joker's whole thing for a while now has been how he's not into money or power or anything, that he just does horrifically awful shit to random people to prove some point or because he thinks it's funny or whatever, and it's like, can we just have him rob an art museum or take over the mob for once? Just normal gangland criminal type shit? Batman has noirish roots after all.

BTAS Joker was perfect, he was intimidating, crazy, but still a clown, and a gangster and driven by human ambitions, not some incomprehensible eldritch madness.
The one thing that Joker fucking needs to get back is fear. Modern Joker doesn't give a shit what happens to him, and that's fucking boring. That's also how shit like Injustice happens.
It's fucking ridiculous how garbage nu-Joker is. He's the most basic bitch "evil for the sake of being evil" antagonist one could imagine, masquerading as some deep philosophical commentary.

I really liked The Joker in the Batman Beyond movie specifically. Still clownish and whimsical to a degree, but also super malevolent and focused on getting shit done.

I really like that Case Study story that Paul Dini did where it's said that a lot of the Joker's "insanity" is an act.

I didn't care for the story much, but I LOVED seeing the Golden Age Joker. I grew up reading a paperback collection of Batman's earliest stories, and the Joker was a surprisingly nasty and straight-to-the-point killer and thief, so it was cool seeing that version come back.

i think its hard to do this at this point because bats has been forced into a place where he has to have gadgets that matches his colleagues power level in the league now. so writers can just give us a normal bank robbing, mobster, clown prince of crime anymore because Batmans evolved into this ridiculous tech hero now. i mean Scott Snyder giving him that ridiculous fucking suit that allows him to go toe to toe with Darksied kind of killed any uniqueness that he brought to the table as a league character. which also pretty much killed Jokers purpose as just a criminal. the bat books really need to revert back to the simpler Detective days for Batman. and for the love of god, the bat family needs to be culled.

I think that every guy other than Robin can be thrown out easily. We don't need Nightwing or Red Hood or Red Robin or whatever the fuck, Batman and Robin are enough. Batgirl and Batwoman can stay since they're distinct enough, although Batwoman could use a rewrite.

I kinda liked that "super-sanity" explanation. I mean the "super-sanity" term is retarded, but I like the idea that Joker can sort of change his personality at will whenever he gets bored with his current one and be genuine regardless of which one he's using. So he spends a year as Silver Age Joker, a year as Jack Nicholson, maybe a couple months as Heath Ledger or Romero, maybe he'll be BTAS' Joker for a while or The Killing Joke's. And sure, if he feels like it, he can turn into a cold, pragmatic motherfucker as well.
