This week's episode is a callback to season 1 episodes and that's what makes it good. I feel like I'm back in 2019 when I stumbled on /co/ after continuously shitting on the western cartoon, and then I found Amphibia and latched on the show since then. I'm afraid I'll be going back to my older self again once the show is over.

If every funny episode had been like Fight or Flight, this would've been the best season the show has ever had. Incredible what they're able to do when they properly balance the episode and pace it properly.

You are too used to "plot" being spit out in single badly paced episodes instead of being build up across the slice of life along the whole show.
I'm loving this "build the resistance" arc.

I think that really only applies to the plot episodes that are just 11 minutes, the "filler episode segments" and the full 22 minute eps tend to be well-paced.

Kids wouldn't like it, maybe that could happen as a Halloween episode but not in the actual canon show. But since we already have our Halloween episode back in season 2 and it won Amphibia an Annie Award. So I guess the concept of evil Anne will just have to stay inside a fan fiction story.

In the entire show's run, not counting the finale, there are only 4(four) episodes where all 3 girls are together outside flashbacks.
This is the biggest disappointment of all

They're able to do that for 'most' of its special and plot episodes.
SOL being exciting and well-paced would make this show even better than what it currently is. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a show that exist that had well-paced SOL episodes hence, they come off as "filler" instead.

As the show nears its end, I can say that while it's done a good job building Anne's relationship with the Planters as a meaningful one, it's a shame they've utterly failed to do the same with Anne's human friends. Despite being her oldest friends, they’re barely seen having an actual friendship. From Sasha and Marcy having only a handful of real interactions with each other compared to with Anne, the two of them being mostly burdens in Anne’s life, to Anne showing almost no concern for them or their parents on Earth outside 1 throwaway scene, you never get the sense that they were ever good friends, despite the show trying to convince you of them having some sort of genuine bond. The series had the perfect opportunity for Anne to reflect and expand on it while she was back home, but it was completely squandered for no good reason. Unless they’re meant to go their separate ways at the end, they’ve done little to show why they should even stay friends once it’s all over.

I don't know, I just didn't think the robot judge was all that funny. Like I get that its a Sheriff of Nottingham reference, but I just don't really care about the Robin Hood parody. It fits Tritonio, but I would've rather they played his character straight. Action felt kinda dumb. The 'look their legs are muscular' joke ran thin after the second time they did it. Tritonio feels blander than he should, which sucks because Combat Camp is one of my favorite S1 episodes. A way better plot for the episode would've just been trying to get Leif's room open at the resistance base. Have, like, an episode where they go back to the Archives for it to keep with the tie-ins to S1. Or, if we wanted to do a Tritonio episode, have him try to rob the resistance base for food and supplies (maybe he's taken in JoJo and another kid as new pupils, but this time he actually cares about them) and they get captured. Tritonio has to help them open the door because he is a master thief. There, fixed it.
I think I rated it a 2/10 yesterday, which was too harsh, I'll admit, but I still put it at like a 4.5/10. Maybe a 5/10 at best, if I'm really looking to be generous. It's one of my least favorite episodes of S3, like somehwere between HHP and Spider Sprig.
Fight or Flight was unrionically a 10/10 episode for me, though. It was so good and such a reminder of why I love funny frogs that it actually gave me whiplash going between it and Newts in Tights. Hop Pop breaking out into poetry put me in a goddamn fit.

I find it the opposite, one of the big complaints of this show is how rushed a bunch of plot episodes end up being like True Colors or The Core and the King.

But the filler episodes tend to be simpler in comparison which allows the 11 minute runtime to work in their favor by not being padded. They're fast paced and tight, that's why I like the SOL of Amphibia.

Wasn't that the point? They care about each other but their relationship dynamic was pretty shitty until they landed in Amphibia, Anne and Marcy actually make good and healthy friends without Sasha, who gets along mostly well with Anne by 3B. Then there's The Dinner and Battle of the Bands, which showed what they could achieve if they worked together in true unision.

That's the whole point of the show, it took a bunch of talking frog people to show the audience that even they could make a better friend for Anne than her toxic human friends does. Sasha is a manipulative bitch and Marcy is just a deranged selfish sociopath that got both of her friends trapped in a dangerous world in the first place all because she wouldn't want to leave.

Sasha and Marcy friendship is one of the most vague.

On earth flashbacks, you get the sense Sasha was kind of done with Marcy. Like she put up with her but never engaged with her.

Marcy seemed to be the mediator for Sasha and Marcy. Her idea to steal the music box still feels completely out of place.

I think the friendship works from Anne perspective. She sort of slid into a submissive role with Sasha, but now has come into her own. Her relationship with Sasha seems to be more mutual respect.

Anne relationship with Marcy was more protection and motherly afraid she'll get hurt. Then she grew more to learn Marcy being capable on her own. Then Marcy did the reveal and now she's being controlled by old newts.

"Newts in Tights" was a wonderful episode revolving around Tritonio's return, and it was great seeing him learn the importance of friendship.

Unfortunately, the ending was a bit contrived. I mean, it's obvious that the letter is blank because Leif had written it in invisible ink. Anne and co. should know by now that it's possible; they encountered one on Earth. Frankly, I can't believe the stupidity.

"Fight or Flight" was also a heartwarming story about Domino 2 and Anne's relationship with it. It was great to see her care so much. The subplot with the baby kill-a-pillar was also pretty funny, but I kept getting interrupted, so I need to watch it again.

Ultimately, "Newts in Tights" and "Fight or Flight" were alright episodes relating to the idea of friendship and loyalty. Alas, they're undermined by the fact that all these themes have a clear parallel to Anne's relationship with Marcy, but Anne doesn't notice.

There was ample opportunity to have her at least reflect on the fact that these lessons also apply to Marcy as well, but they're never brought up. I would have liked to have seen the show do justice to their relationship, especially since it went so horribly.

As a result, it felt rather disappointing and tone-deaf for me to see Anne talk about friendship and yet get away with mentioning Marcy only once in "Fight or Flight" (and even then it's on something rather unrelated). It felt like Marcy didn't even matter here.

Ultimately, I would have to give these episodes an 8.5/10. They were fun to watch in isolation, but with that big storyline going on it felt rather disappointing. Marcy got fucking stabbed, possessed, and possibly memory-wiped. She deserves better than this.

Join Gallery Nucleus on a trip to Amphibia with a gallery exhibition / fan celebration! On display April 23 - May 1.

Come by on opening night to see a collection of show art by the production artists from the hit show, and catch the live Q&A panel featuring the show's creator Matt Braly.

OPENING RECEPTION DETAILS (April 23, 2022, 6pm - 8pm PST)

Q&A PANEL & SIGNING DETAILS (April 23, 2022, 3pm - 6pm PST)

In Person

Tickets will be available starting March 19th at 8am PST. TICKETS HERE
The Q&A will be limited to 100 people in-person at $10 a ticket. Limit 2 tickets per purchase. Any purchase of more than 2 tickets will be automatically refunded.
The panel will end at 5 pm, at which point the panelists will proceed to sign for guests.
Limit 2 items signed per person. Signatures only.
The gallery will be closed off during the panel and will reopen again at 6pm for the reception/artwork viewing.

Online guests can submit questions through the Twitch chat.
Twitch requires you to 13+ in order to create a Twitch account to comment on the live stream.
