For me, nothing beats creator-owned comics. Groo, Cerebus, Bone, Usagi Yojimbo...they all just feel so personal compared to Marvel/DC schlock and pander-y manga.

It was a corporate event but they assign a writer whose son had just died to write it, which might be scummy and manipulative, but you gotta admit it's a stroke of editorial genius to have your edgy event where everyone dies be written by a person suffering from real-life grief.

All on my top 5 all time favorite (never got around to Groo).
For years now I've been looking something like these. I definitelly agree with them feeling more personal, but another main appeal for me is that they feel ambitious. Bone is an excellent Fantasy Epic, Usagi has been CONISTENTLY great for over 200 issues, and Cerebus is just th pinacle of storytelling for the medium.

I can recommend Elf Quest if you want a similar feel.

The first 3-4 volumes are probably the best of the bunch imo, vol 5 is pretty weak except for the fact that there was another alien on earth but I have yet to read vol 6

Reading Cerebus right now. It might over take From Hell as my favorite comic, but yeah From Hell is one of the few comics that is genuinely literary. Sadly the media just wants to push the narrative of Moore as a stodgy old hypcrite who hates superheroes.

I've never actually read Cerebus but I've seen a lot of art from it and I love the way it looks.

Does it actually severely decline once Sim outs himself as a Baste Boi, or is that just propaganda? Is there actually a serious creative and narrative decline once he introduces the Female Void, or do people just say that because they get upset about his politics?

Okay, I'll get around to reading it eventually. I've been reading The Spirit and Prince Valiant whenever I have the time to actually sit down and read, which isn't often. I've always been interested in Cerebus and I have it sitting on my hard drive, I just haven't been able to get around to it yet.

You're so full of shit, it is terrible after guys save for the final arc and a few of the blank out issues and it's partially because of his opinions on women. He completely retcons Jaka's character for no reason. Guys is good because of his opinions on women ironically though.

Despite not being finished yet I'm gonna say both. The earlier issues feel more light-hearted, cheerfully experimental, interested in the world. As it gets to the later stuff it shifts to feeling more guarded, uptight, po-faced. The funny thing is the Female Void stuff has an exact equivalent earlier in the comic that places the blame on men instead. The anti-women stuff that comes in later issues is specifically a revision/reflection on that. Nobody gave a shit when he was blaming men for all the bad in the world but at least some people did when he turned on women. You can see how that could drive a guy to cynicism.
