The gift is the house. She's the inheritor of the house once the grandma passes away. It's why she never had a room, the house is her room. But that's actually just my headcannon and the director has gone to say that she flat out doesn't have a gift and the reason she doesn't have a gift is because it doesn't matter the reason because that's not the point of the movie.

Yes, Abuela is not very nice to Maribel - or anyone else in her family. The only thing she ever says to Pepa is "You have a cloud!" The only thing she talks to Isabel about is growing flowers and marrying Mariano.
Is this because she's a villain? NO.
It's because she suffered a traumatic experience that she never truly recovered from and obsesses over it and the miracle and town so much that she forgets to let her family know how much they mean to her. She is so determined not to lose what she has now like she lost Abuelo then that she forgets to appreciate and nurture the very thing she's trying to hold on to.

This isn't subtle. They basically have Mirabel spell this out.

Honestly the abuela in the movie just reminded me of toxic grandma's in my life who end up becoming spiteful at the happiness of their children. The only real magical thing in this movie was the grandma forgiving Mirabel so fast. Latin Grandma's that are controlling like Abuela was in this movie are just toxic manipulative women. So while Abuela wasn't a villain in the movie sense, she represented a villain in the real world. One that doesn't go away after a hug and I'm sorry.

The message of the movie has nothing to do with powers or being special
It's a story about healing generational trauma (the Abuelo's death and its impact on Abuela causing a cascading effect on all the children and grandchildren). They added superpowers to make things more bright and fun for kids. IIRC it's based on real interviews with a family whose matriarch was a refugee

The message was literally a line in the last song "you are more than just your gifts"

Abuela made a whole town-wide ceremony about their family receiving their powers.
She made sure that their whole lives revolved around her interpretation of how they could use their powers to benefit their community

Under Abuela, they were only defined by their powers, and weren't allowed to have any interests or lives outside of their talents

And this was underlined by the community coming to their aid when they needed it, when they no longer had their powers and had to spend a few days learning how to live without them

It's not projecting when the character herself is based on something that a lot of households experience. She was traumatized, as most abusers are. But that trauma doesn't give the right to abuse. Doesn't give the right to sell your children to make the villagers happy. Doesn't give the right to rule with fear. Luisa's entire song was about being afraid of not living up to what's expected of her. Dolores knows Bruno still lives in the house but says nothing because she's afraid of the grandma that's already shunned him. She literally sticks Mirabel in the broom closet instead of asking the magic house to make a simple room for her. Just because she experiences hardships doesn't make it ok to traumatize her only family and keep that toxic cycle going. It's fine that she asks for forgiveness and everything is resolved at the end but the parallels to real people and real experiences are still there.

This movie honestly makes me feel like this should have been a miniseries or something. I loved the movie from the start to when she meets Bruno and learns that she has to embrace Isabela. After that, it kinda gets rushed I feel from fixing her relationship with Isabela to Abuela and Mirabel making up after their argument. This is bad writing. The core of the story is the mystery of why the house is cracking and why the faily are losing their powers. It's strongly implied it's related to Mirabel not receiving a gift, because two of the only traits she really has are 1. Somehow connected to the power fading and 2. Didn't receive a gift .
But no, these two central facts are unrelated, she just didn't get a gift for no reason and was also the key to the entire plot, the plot that was about people's gifts fading. Garbage.

Disagree, the opening number of the movie was her singing to the world about how amazing each member of her family is and how she feels lucky to be a part of such a talented family, even though she herself doesn't have a gift. Later she has a private song about wanting more, but she doesn't act entitled about it. If that were true, she'd be delighted to hear that everyone's losing their powers, instead she spends the whole movie trying to stop it even though it doesn't really benefit her.

Like imagine having 4 older brothers who are all 6'4+, super handsome, academic geniuses with huge dicks and you grow up to be like 5'8 and completely average in all respects. You'd be pissed off, even if you objectively have a better life than a lot of people. And yeah you might talk about how proud you are of your brothers and how great they're doing, but secretly you'd probably be bitter about how naturally blessed they are compared to you.

Luisa's problem is that she had eldest sibling syndrome (even though Isabela might be older).

She was the biggest and strongest so she felt that it was her job to protect everyone. Everything was her responsibility, and everyone in the family, everyone in the town, fed in to that belief.
They constantly asked her to do more and gave her more responsibilities while Mirabel only had to do what she volunteered to do because she's the baby

So when Mirabel was asking about the cracks and the problems with the magic Luisa tried to ignore her because she didn't trust her enough to share the weight, because Luisa is the only one whose ever had to bear the responsibility until now

Anon, the house was breaking because of the dysfunction of the family, no one should have given Mirabel any shit just for being a normie, if Abuela wouldn't have put so much weight on the gifts and their need to be useful to the town the magic and the house would be fine.
Which is, you know, what happen at the end, were Abuela claims "you are more than just your gift" and everyone prepares for a normal life so the magic is restored, as the dysfunction is fixed (Isabela can let herself be genuine, Luisa can rest, Pepa can have a cloud around her, etc)

I took it as Isabela and Luisa overcompensating for Mirabel not having a gift. They had to live ten years hearing about, so Isabela focus on becoming Abuela's ideal to help the family, and Luisa overwork herself without relaxing or resting to compensate for the fact that Mirabel couldn't.

Isabella was a huge bitch for no reason especially considering how much older she is. But I think the issue is a lot more what the family doesn't do for Mirabel than active bullying shown on screen.

Mirabel is the only person apart from the husbands without a photo with grandma on the wall. No one seems to care. Mirabel doesn't get her own fucking room, she has to share a nursery with every future rugrat that comes along. No one does anything. Mirabel is missing from a big family photo shoot. No one notices and not even her parents comment on it at any point later in the film. Dolores can't keep her mouth shut about Mirabel's secret for more than 30 seconds during an important dinner party (despite not telling anyone about Bruno's secret for 10 years). The party is a disaster and everyone blames Mirabel including Pepa and Lusia who verbally lash out at her. Abuela tears into Mirabel for being a loser who ruins everything. Her parents and both her sisters (who she's made up with at this point) just watch without sticking up for her. Like the movie has her parents weakly defend Mirabel at earlier points but they do nothing when it actually matters.

I know how the plot turned out, what I'm saying is that it was heavily implied that there was a reason Mirabel didn't get a gift, and that it was somehow related to the magic fading. The fact that her shining door actually appeared, but then faded once she touched it, it was like the house was rejecting her or something. She had a whole song about why she didn't have a gift and whether or not it was too late for her to get one, which leads directly into her vision (?) about the house cracking. And then they just drop that as a plot thread and work her into the story about Bruno's gift, her lack of gift isn't relevant to anything else that happens, only her place in Bruno's prophecy.

As it stands it just feels like an unfinished story, with a big mystery that goes unanswered.

The house used her as an antibiotic, by not giving her the gift it indirectly used her to fix the problems of everyone else's gifts being misused through Abuela's expectations which was causing the house to crack.

The reason was the dysfunction, it is shown at the end with the grandma walking with the candle and Bruno, Isabella and Luisa being cowed by her ending with Mirabel's door fading. The conversation before was Abuela telling the young girl that by gaining a gift she would become a part of the family. The implication being that the magic faded at that moment because of the expectations on her.
You could say that it worked with Antonio because Mirabel was supporting him like family all the way to the door. Then, the second Mirabel was feeling left out, the house began breaking down fast.

This is headcanon, I could just as easily claim that the reason she didn't get a gift is because the magic didn't judge her as worthy of one. This is a nice interpretation but it's not the right answer. There is no right answer, that's my problem. We can headcanon all day long but the story does not contain a reason for one of the main plot points happening. Antonio had arguably even more pressure on him, because if he failed too it would prove that there was something seriously wrong with the magic, something that could hurt the whole family. Mirabel didn't even know failure was an option, she didn't have any more pressure on her than anyone else in the family, and they all got their gifts.

And what about Dolores? How is super-hearing actually useful on its own? Arguably she should have been the one to heal the family, surely she knew about everyone's private conversations and pressures. She apparently knew Bruno was living some grim, depressing half-life in the walls and just... didn't tell anyone? Or reach out to him? And then there's Isabel, like making flowers is something worth spending magic on.
Not giving Mirabel a gift so she could accomplish something implies the others got gifts to they could accomplish things, which a lot of them just don't.

That's not the main mystery anon, the mystery of why the magic is not working is very clearly told, the mechanics of it are not necessary. Mirabel wasn't unhappy because she didn't have a gift, she was unhappy because she felt disconnected from the rest of her family. She only cared about getting one because it would make her worthy of her name and useful the Alma and the people in town.
Had she gotten a gift she would have had the same problems the rest of the family does and it would have broken down anyway. Her not getting a gift was just a symptom of a larger problem.

You're not getting it anon. This is a story, a story with a plot, a plot with events and consequences. Saying "It didn't matter that X" only works from an emotional stance; yes, her family should have treated her better even though she didn't have a gift instead of treating her like an outsider. Yes, Alma should have come to the conclusion that the willingness to help the community matters even if you don't have magic powers. This is true, and it's the emotional message of the movie. But that still doesn't explain WHY she didn't get a power in the first place.
This isn't some nitpicky thing, this is an event that affects her entire life and personality, it's a moment of perceived failure that raises huge implications for the nature of the miracle they've been benefitting from, how they relate to it, and how it relates to their world. Antonio getting his power is an important scene, and whether or not he'll get one is a huge question mark looming over his life up to this point. And these questions, these narrative threads are just... not answered. It's just a thing that happened, it doesn't matter.

Except the movie tells you it matters, many times, to both the plot and the characters. But it's not important, except it's the most important moment of Mirabel's life, except don't worry about why or how. Just eat your popcorn and be happy they're singing. If you want a plot that isn't full of holes, go watch an older, better Disney movie. It'd be like if they never explained why Hercules turned mortal, or why Rapunzel's hair is magic, or why Vannellope gltiches out. These things matter to these characters and these stories, and they're either explained up front or revealed later. But Mirabel just... didn't get a power, even though everyone else in her family did. Don't worry about it.

If it was all a test for Alma, she would have been the one in Bruno's vision. It wouldn't even be a test, the magic can see the future so it would have known from the beginning how Alma would act. Narratively there's no evidence for this theory, and it reduces Mirabel from a tragic heroine to an unfortunate pawn in someone else's game.

Abuela and the rest of the family are obsessed with being useful to the village. When each child gets their gift Abuela makes a point of reminding them their purpose is to serve. At the start of the film Mirabel is shown to overwork and over-extend herself trying to keep up and be useful any way she can. She views herself as less useful than her family because she doesn't have a gift. There's the whole butterfly metaphore around, about how Alma close her heart and only got worse as time go by, until she only saw the Miracle and not the people the miracle was for. True, but the existence of magic flowers and spells is something we can accept as being part of this world. In Hercules gods are real, in Wreck-It Ralph video game characters are sentient and can talk to eachother. The things that affect the protagonist outside of the world's normal rules are what need to be explained; why is Hercules super strong (to him) or why isn't he on Olympus anymore (to us). Why doesn't Vanellope, who looks exactly like a character from this videogame, have a cart, and why is she glitching? Why was Rapunzel born with a very specific magic power in a world where, although magic does exist, no one else has anything like she has? Important questions that drive the plot and that the characters get answers to.
Mirabel does not and will never know why she alone was rejected by the rules of her world, and neither will we. It just happened, I guess. She can have her theories, and so can we, but the writers didn't bother to include one, so they're just guesses. Bad writing.

You are missing the point of her not getting a gift, the reason behind her not getting one can be many but they don't matter to the story, what matter is the cause and the effect it has on the family. The cause is Alma's mentality and the consequence is the plot.
If you want the movie to explain the exact mechanics of the miracle and dump unnecessary magic rules in a story that doesn't need them then you didn't get what it was about.

But you're missing the point about accepting people or whatever. Instead the reveal of her condition lead to the reveal of the main antogonist, it was worked into the plot in a satisfying way. It served a purpose, it wasn't just some unfortunate thing that happened.
Don't insert a huge mystery without paying it off, is all I'm saying. Why she didn't get a gift was set up as an important thing that she wanted to find out, except it wasn't and she didn't.

They chose to set it up as this mysterious and unexplained thing that happened, and they chose not to explain it. Of course why it happened mattered to the plot, Antonio's whole arc is about whether or not he's going to get a power. We still don't know why he got one and she didn't, she's the sole outlier and there's not a single reason given. It's bad writing, and I'm one of many, many people who's first thought as the credits rolled was, "Wait, so why didn't she get a gift?"

Luisa finally relaxing at the end shows that the family don't have to work themselves to death being useful to the town. They can just enjoy their gifts for themselves sometimes and not obsess over being of service. And Isabella has apparently never made anything other than flowers because nobody expected or asked for anything else. She's the beautiful perfect angel, nobody ever considered that she'd be useful for anything practical like growing crops. Now that she's free to explore her power she'll be even more useful to the town.

There are theories on how the birth order of children can affect their personalities and roles in the family. The movie puts a lot on the role Mirabel and her siblings play in their family and their gifts (and lack of gifts) are directly relative to those roles. Luisa and Isabel's songs are about how they're stuck in those roles and them wanting to break free of them. I promise it's there.

Now Bruno idk. He's one of a set of triplets and idk how those dynamics play out since they would all be equal in theory. But Bruno is the only boy in the family at the time (given Abuela and Pepa's personalities is probably used to be lorded over) and his gift gives him a lot of opportunity for negativity. He always gave bad news and bad things happen afterwards. People start to associate him with bad things. Eventually it warps into him being the cause of bad things. Even if you're only pointing out the problem and are powerless to do anything about it people are going to start to think of you as the problem. Because you're always bringing them problems. If it rains every time you're sad you'll eventually start to get sad when it rains because that's the only association you know. He left with his vision because he knew it was going to affect how they treated Mirabel. If Abuela knew Mirabel could destroy the magic, even if there was an alternative of her strengthening the magic, Abuela would've treated her the same as Bruno was treated. Bad. She still treated Mirabel bad but it was a different kind of bad.

Remember that Bruno had his vision that showed Mirabel involved with the house breaking *after* her failed gift ceremony, and he only had a vision about Mirabel because he was purposefully looking into her future. Mirabel is only involved with the magic failing because Abuela assumes she's the problem. She didn't get a gift but the magic still works fine, so the problem must be Mirabel and not the magic. Abuela's attitude toward Mirabel and the family's place in the village creates the problem that Bruno foresaw, and makes Mirabel part of it. Mirabel wouldn't be part of the problem or the solution if Abuela hadn't made it happen. It's literally a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The family thinks she's not special because she doesn't have a gift, but the opening song is Mirabel explaining that she's cool and awesome just by being part of the family. It takes the whole movie for Abuela and everyone else to accept this, but the point is the miracle is the family and not their magic. Even Mirabel's I Want song is her lamenting that she wants to be useful and make her family proud, not that she wants magic just to be cool.

The whole plot of "Our family is toxic and dysfunctional and that's why the magic is dying" is pretty weak when you realize only three or four people in the whole family were really having issues. Abuela puts too much pressure on the ones with useful gifts but Mirabel's parents have no problem standing up for her, and they clearly don't ignore her. Everybody seems to love Mirabel (and each other), except for some normal sibling tension which gets resolved in the time it takes to sing one song.

Mirabel and Bruno were entertaining characters and the songs were surprisingly decent, but the vast majority of the cast was so fucking unlikeable. The sister and grandma did not deserve the reconciliation and ending they got, I knew it was coming but I audibly groaned when it happened.

I just looked at the palette, but it seems similar to ones I already have. I really like the ears but they're more expensive than I feel they should be. Its a musical about families made by Disney. You are almost literally supposed to project your family problems onto it, seems more like you don't want to discuss flaws about something you like. I liked the movie but it had too many artists and not a strong enough goal for the story, they fart around and explain nothing about the magic. A real good plot element would have been the dead grandfathers soul being what powered the magic house and how their careless overuse of miracles for day to day stuff was burning the power source out.
