Joker was a serious threat since his literal debut in Batman #1, so much so that it was massive fan demand that brought him back from the dead at the issue’s end. He’s always since been referred to as Batman’s archenemy, followed Batman through the camp era still being his archenemy, and was remade again into a dark, mass-myrderous threat by Dennis O’Neil’s work on Joker’s Five Way Revenge -
- in 1973. Killing Joke came out 15 years after that made Joker a sadistic murderer (again, not even for the first time) and worked off of the precedent that had already been set for a decade and a half. But of course you wouldn’t know that, being braindamaged and all.
