>>127302777Jews then, and now don't hate blacks, but Americans as a whole might be unionists, or secessionists, but were loyal to their state, then the nation. Jews were no exemption.
In 1862/3, General Ullysses S. Grant issued General Order Number 11. It was a rounding up, and an expulsion of all Jews in his military district. To this date, it remains the only Jewish expulsion order ever issued outside of a handful of European states in the middle ages.
Jewish families were accused by Grant or profiting off of dead soldiers, and illegally smuggling cotton to benefit the Southern war effort. Grant's own father had been denied a cotton transport permit, and would financially benefitted from this. Very few, if any, Jews were ever involved in the cotton trade.
Grant rounded up at least 50 families, probably as many as 300 people, and forceably marched them from their homes, on foot. More were planned, but a confederate attack curtailed further expulsion efforts.
Grant would not try to make ammends for this until the Republican party forced him to in his late 1860s presidential campaign. The Jewish community took his apology for what it was worth (re: nothing), and seeing as how the Republicans were at least moving towards equalizing black freed people, it was all handwaved under the principle of "Tikun Ha'Olam" (repair the world).
