I think it's totally acceptable for the new team to affirm their disagreement with Doug, so long as they don't attack him personally. And even though he's not involved with the show, he's still writing the graphic novels, so we all win: people who like Doug can read the comics, and people who don't can watch the show.
Picture it: two different Earthworm Jim projects made by two different creative teams with completely different worldviews, throwing not-too-mean-but-also-not-very-nice shade at each other on social media. To me, this is the best possible outcome.
I want Doug to call the TV show people hippies and I want the TV show people to tell Doug to take his meds. And then I want TV Jim to monologue into the camera about how the comic Jim is an imposter and not to be trusted. And then I want comic Jim to say the same of TV Jim.
The meta narrative could be as fun as the actual projects.
