As the game progresses you even feel it from a gameplay standpoint, where you start getting more teammate abilities, getting the groove of using them all together combined in combat, and then at points in the game you lose a teammate for whatever reason, like they're busy hacking something and you have to defend them or something like that, and you feel it in combat, like there's suddenly less you can do as a player. The game is designed like this purposely, and at one point you get separated from the others, and you're Starlord alone, and you're faced against the Blood Brothers.
It's literally an impossible fight because the Blood Brothers are invincible while they're close together, and because you're the only target, they're constantly just walking and running towards you beside each other, and you can't separate them. You feel completely useless. And then once one or two of your other teammates show up, you're able to get them apart and start actually fighting them and beating them
It's really smart game design
