Some of this was due to the fact that it was ORIGINALLY meant to star Michael Jackson and be rather different, but he pulled out of the project, leaving the studio holding the bag, so they made the best of it. Plus, the allegory was definitely there for people who knew the history of Hollywood, but it didn't bludgeon the viewer over the head with the message.
