Thus being a class of poverty-stricken citizen in a foreign land, trying to rely on other Americans taking sympathy on him to get by. He ends up asking the same person this question three times, leaching a quarter off of him all three times, while probably aiming to spend it all on booze, but inevitably getting paired up with the primary plot of the film.
