I dunno if this was something they didn’t bother to plan ahead of time, or if they had an idea they were gonna do this and just didn’t give a shit about setting it up, but the nature of King’s delusions and when he’s playing pretend and when he is supposed to seriously believe something now feels all over the place, looking back. He sounds completely serious every time, but this episode is trying to tell us “oh sometimes he was just messing around, like all those times the things clearly couldn’t be real, and other times he fully believed the shit he was saying about his past, because of his scrambled memories. Also, he felt no need to mention or even allude to his memory problems or any amount of mystery regarding his past before now.”
I still like the episode and think King is better now than before, but this doesn’t shine any light on how he was in season 1 in retrospect, the way a background story reveal like this should. He is still just as shitty in season 1 as ever.
I’m even wondering if they thought this reveal was gonna be so cool that they intentionally didn’t leave any hints because they didn’t want to “give it away” and get predicted, so they instead totally fucked it up.
