It just so happens that Shark Tale lowered the bar for what to expect for non Pixar CG films, so when Robots came out, critics approached it with low expectations and a bit exhausted after ripping ST apart for months, so they were more forgiving of a terrible story than they should've ( those fancy visuals didn't hurt either ). Had Robots came out before ST, i assure you that reviews would've been more on the negative side. Blue Sky got lucky that Dreamworks lowered the bar before they did.
