Kamala was created with marketing at the forefront, her whole introduction a byproduct of a campaign to sideline the X-Men with Inhumans and to pass on the mantle of Ms Marvel after Carol was rebranded as the new Captain. Much like the rest of the “All New, All Different” lineup, she was strategically placed into comics for the express purpose of being adapted into film, to be legitimized as source material just enough to be farmed for films. Her entire in universe identity is built around a worship of the Avengers, specifically the Avengers your average movie goer would know, that and Captain Marvel who somehow became an A-lister in universe overnight enough to have licensed merchandise. She is a stand in for the consumer, a kid who worships her heroes not through ideals, but through the collecting of their memorabilia, of their brand. She is commercial synergy at its most insidious, propped up by Disney and shielded by fickle 2010’s social politics. Her only saving grace is that she’s actually mildly likable with a good design, but the hyper push she’s gotten in the mainstream over other longer standing characters is nothing of not telling of her true purpose.
