Well, it's not like EEnE needed one. I frankly never expected it before it happened, though it was surely a nice surprise. Still, I guess Johnny never had anything comparable to Eddy's brother which made this no conitinuity show still actually have build up for the finale and allowed for something to build Eddy's character development on. I mean, imagine a movie in which Johnny grow up somewhat and gets a girl because of some movie plot device, wouldn't be as satisfying.

And with the executive meddling he would've faced, he rather work on his own studio with his own crew to get his actual vision through.

Also with >>123347693: Antonucci had the luck that Linda Simensky was the person who he contacted first for the pitch. Linda already knew Danny and loved the concept because she grew up in a neighborhood along two other Linda's. As Linda was the co-executive of Cartoon Network, she was quite the big person to have as an acquaintance.

Ed Edd n Eddy getting greenlit was a mix of bravado, daring and luck. It still fucking baffles me.

It's weird, as both EEnE and Courage are the first out-house produced Cartoon Cartoons, so you'd expect Dilworth being able to do more with the IP.

But I think the reason for it being on the bad side for Dilly is either:
>Dilly only gave away a portion of the IP rights, which makes sure that Cartoon Network has enough leeway to dictate it
>As Courage originally started off as a Hanna-Barbera pilot, Dilly already lost the IP in 1996 and CN only allowed Dilworth to work on out-house because they trust him and Stretch Films Inc. also co-produced the pilot
>Dilly gave away all the IP rights so he can work on the Courage continuations he desperately wanted after the cancellation

Either way, it's sad.

Cartoon Network in 1996 isn't like Cartoon Network in 2001 - they relied heavily on reruns of old Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros shows, SGC2C, The Moxy Show were their only original programming, Dexter was still in its first season and What A Cartoon was just a year old and none of the other classics (PPG, C&C, JB, Courage) got greenlit yet. It was all very experimental and raw for one BIG reason:

The network was desperately looking for original series during the mid 90s.

Danny pitched the show on the right time. If he pitched the show in any other year, he'd have a much harder time getting the greenlight.

Not just in terms of knowing the right exec at the right time, and pitching it at the right time, but also having all the right people working under and above Antonucci. And Antonucci himself not being a narcissistic maniac (which is unfortunately often for anyone who gets a hint of power).

CN couldn't even make an advertisement without Antonucci looking over and agreeing to it. Even with CN's DC comics back in the 2000s, staff members of EEnE actually wrote and pencilled them.

Season 1 had a few, like the sleeping bear, or the frozen time, or the protein shake, but I always remembered season 2 and 3 being the most insane and fun of the whole lot.
Johnny always needed a side cast like Pops and Carl to bounce off of. Suzy just wasn't going to cut it.
