Can't be done, the only way it could work is if you scrapped it completely and just adapted the source material. Even then, the movie was ugly even for late-2000s CG standards but that's what you get when you outsource it to some Chinese sweatshop studio that only made a single movie before and shuttered right after this.

This was meant to be their third movie. It was slated to come out after Gatchaman, but production on that one was such a disaster that Astroboy ended up coming first

I watched this last month online and I couldn't finish it. The beginning is very slow and very weird, it was INTERESTING seeing the new radically different take on the Astro Boy mythos, and I guess hearing Nicholas fucking Cage emote a genius but emotionally conflicted scientist was surreal in all the delicious ways possible, but at some point after Astro finishes meeting the rebel bots down below in their shack and leave I just lost complete interest because he was now tagging with a bunch of annoying 'tude driven '00s kids. It was at that point I realized 40 min of the movie was spent building up a veeeeewerry slow beginning and I was left wondering what the final 3rd act could possibly entail, if not something incredibly anemic and not very fufilling as a climax. Feels like a very weird pitch masquerading as a pilot for a TV show, which probably would have fleshed out the extraneous characters better and introduce more interesting plot lines. But as it is, its a wholly mediocre and bizarre movie, and I finally understand why Shark Tale anon is so fascinated by it.

Like, they introduce these sorta comedic characters, and then do nothing with them. You'd think they'd serve as recurring comic relief, but they barely appear after their introduction. As if they were being saved for the TV show. Tenma's robot butler is another example of a character that gets no role. Strange movie

Why the hell did they just stick a realistic human face on a giant round head like that? Shit looks uncanny as fuck. I’m not even gonna touch on how much of a visual clusterfuck that hair and outfit is. This is the standard when it comes to poorly thought out character design.

Eh, I don't really think that matters. Studios want big name actors to attract morons, but unless they do a particularly bad job or the voice doesn't fit the character. Tom Hanks voicing Woody or Eddie Murphy voicing Donkey doesn't really hurt the movie. The only crime is having Nick Cage and not having him ham it up.

There's plenty of the Western tropes that was never in the original source material. Tenma is Nicolas Cage, they did a complete reskin for him. Parents are supposed to love their kids so they went with the "he doesn't acknowledge Toby as his son yet" arc. Has the main villain constantly talk about the elections, pro war with no dimension. Added characters who do not fit in with the Astro Boy style because realism is more important. Makes poor attempts with discrimination, prejudice, and slavery allegory for robots, in the end it's sort of justified how they're treated because Toby kills a bunch of robots but a human cannot be hurt. Second class citizens robots who do want freedom are delusional Communists which already means their cause is doomed from the start. Has the the protagonist with a secret plot point when it's already clear he's a robot, has mentor betrayal because he's a secret villain, and they turned my man Hamegg into a ball for fat jokes.
