Yannit and the Indrel can't read, not because they're not smart enough to learn written text, but because their thermal vision prevents them from seeing any contrast between the text and the surface it's painted on to. Unless the ink is reflective of infrared and there's a heat source nearby and angled properly to reflect that IR, it would be invisible.
Similarly, a human inside an indrel hive would be completely blind because the human eye can't detect infrared and i seriously doubt the Indrel would want to be poisoning the atmosphere with carbon dioxide from fires.
