Kaijumax is great
Ultramega is violent and overly cynical but it's fun just for the visuals

I thought Rise of Ultraman was really good but the pacing was really bad, but Trials seems like it's learned that mistake so far

If you want to get an interesting take on Godzilla that's still really damn true to the character and also depicts prime old school Marvel before everything went to cringe, I can't praise the Marvel Essential Godzilla enough. It starts off as just good old Godzilla, but it gets more intertwined with the world of 616 even more. It's honestly so fucking underrated.

I don't think you'll find any american Ultra comics, BUT there is an old Dark Horse pseudo manga of Ultraman Tiga that is absolutely based. It starts off resembling the first two episodes of the show and goes off the fucking rails. Do yourself a favor and read this bad boy.

Kong's lore is dwarfed substantially by Goji's because Goji has more material
Kong hardly has a rogues gallery and I think this is all exemplified when you get down to how Kong's story was "finished" when the planes got him
Sure Godzilla died in his original movie as well but the second Godzilla is who we essentially see across almost every other film or comic

If you liked Higgins' work on Ultraman, you might like his and Parrott's work on Power Rangers
It's not entirely kaiju (this is more for Toku inspired comics in general) and to be honest the early monsters are fairly generic
Again not kaiju related but Higgins is also doing a Toku inspired series called Radiant Black you might want to keep an eye on
There's already a giant robot confirmed for it

Most of the recent shows are good picks, Ultraman Z wouldn't be a bad starting point (mostly) but most of them are great

Well, I think people think of Ultraman from the design and the title. But, I mean. Five pages in and it's super obvious that Devilman is a more obvious influence. Devilman Lady in particular, minus the psychosexual aspects. The author's afterword even mentions Devilman. I wouldn't call it cynical, just that I think people are totally mislead by the title and wanna compare it to Ultraman.

Rightfully so. It invites the comparison deliberately. But that shouldn't be a barrier. It's like complaining Squeak the Mouse is edgier than Tom and Jerry. And Ultraman isn't exactly homogeneous anyway.

The whole ending reminds me of aspects of the later arc of the Devilman manga. With the Aniti-Demon Corps and and the post-apocalyptic vibe. It's not a 1:1 comparison, but it's just that general vibe.

I'd say the series has more to do with the dark hero archetype in general than Ultraman. It's a hero who's got powers of a somewhat dark and dubious nature handling threats that are not quite cut and dry.

That doesn't change the fact it's about giants that go toe to toe with monsters. The first issue was very much a play on Ultraman. They aren't mutually exclusive. The rest of the series might not stay that way, though. The first issue left off in a place it could go anywhere from.
