>>121937680You’re taking the “comic relief” line too literally. You’re not supposed to look to Kid for laughs, he’s the main character. You’re supposed to find him cute, resonant and endearing. Rosa is the comic relief. That line was put there to kickstart his insecurity. Kid is the “spirit” of the team in the sense that he’s the meta leader and the only one with any ambition. Jo just wants to fuck around in Paris. Rosa wants to play. Tuna wants to protect Kid. G wants to humor kid. Kid is the only one who decides to be a superhero with the ring, they’re all roped in following his lead and acting as extras to his story about learning self-worth.
I don’t see why you bring up how “useful” or “badass” he is either, when the whole point is that he shouldn’t be. The other characters get by on the fact their rings are easier to use, and Kid’s actions are motivated by this resentment because he was the one who shared them. You don’t actually think Rosa is a good combatant do you?
When Kid gets the other rings he fucks the aliens’ shit up on his first try, he decimates their entire army and would’ve trashed their mothership if not for his ptsd. Chuck defers to him as his new Great Leader because he was braver than his own king was. And the point remained that Kid felt no better for it despite his glory, because he was left alone and stripped of his temporary powerfantasy.
Kid is the best character in the show, by a mile, because we learn the most about him. His character is explored, it’s peeled-back for us, we learn his interests, his motivations, his behaviours, his mannerisms, the story behind those motivations, and we see how he grows and changes in response to the world around him. His character is not lessened by the fact “he’s not the only kid on the team”, because that’s just treating him like he’s just a gimmick instead of a character.
