Then I moved onto Italian comics which were wholly black and white. Zagor, Dylan Dog, Nathan Never, Commander Mark, etc.
And guess what, those Italian comics have about 100 pages per issue each month and cost barely more than the average American comic. If not less.
Black and white art helps keep the costs down and colour isn't necessary. It's just nice to have.
Just recently I read through the entire Torpedo 1936 collection, including the latest release (Torpedo 1972, in colour). The originals did not need colour and are fantastic. The newest release has full colour. Personally, I could take it or leave it, because the stories and lineart are just that good.
