Dogs are only 'man's best friend' and better at following human commands because they've been domesticated longer, so they've literally adapted to us. As well as the fact that they're social rather than solitary. Cats on the other hand are independent but their love is true and worth it when earned. Plus, they're much less work. Also can't quite maim or kill you like a dog. Both are good, but good for different reasons. I like cats better personally but it depends on what you want the pet for and your personality.
