Hades is a very good game, though the developer's hipster fame status definitely contributed to them being on the charts. It's very polished, very well put together, very satisfying to play. I wasn't too hot on Supergiant before (Transistor is massively overrated IMO), but Hades is undoubtedly a very slick game.
However, from a visual design viewpoint it's nothing special. There are points where it shines, like the design of Elysium, and it's all very competently done (except for their "artistic" intentional artifacting, which makes people wonder if they are having graphical issues), but most of it is quite boring. Not really a crime on its own, but ancient Greece has such a striking visual style of its own that it does feel like they threw the baby out with the bathwater.>>120806129
This just looks like them trying to appeal to the woke crowd. Every character in the game looks white, with the exception of some of them having slightly outlandish skin colors. Athena has dark grey skin, and Artemis has light green skin. Dionysus and Ares are fairly dark, but it's like everyone forgets that Greeks would have been brown as shit. They're Mediterranean people who would have been out in the sun all day. Contemporary artwork shows men as being brown as fuck, with only noble women being pale, because they get to sit in the shade all day. Hence pale skin being a sign of wealth. The most woke thing they do is that you can date Thanatos and that Artemis is heavily hinted at being a lesbo.>>120806433
Romans would straight up recognize foreign gods as legitimate. We've found tons of Roman style dedications to local gods erected by traders sailing on Britannia. In the late Republic there was already a temple to Isis in Rome, and one conservative senator who wanted to tear it down had to do it by himself because no-one else wanted to anger the gods. Rome also had a Jewish population, and Julius Caesar was friendly to them. And then there was that bull god thing.
