Yeah this character was unneeded.
They could have had Saddie and Lars drift apart due to both of them just focusing on their individual lives.
It would have been a lot nicer to have the cool kids talk Steven down while they were in the dome because they know him and have helped him deal with some of his emotional stress in the past.

Yes to both of those questions. Like I said, Shep is just a token. His whole purpose is just a sad attempt at "representation." It's just politically correct tokenism. There's no reason that diverse characters can't also be well written and interesting.
