I recently got WE3 and Silver surfer parable gifted on the Christmas thread a week ago, WE3 almost made me cry and I still gotta read Silver Surfer parable but my new job is buttfucking my free time. I ordered Squadron Supreme but that isn’t coming til the 28th. My paycheck is gonna come soon, I also get an extra 350 from my work since it’s Christmas. I was thinking of getting one of these omnis.

I ordered the Books of Magic omnibus after watching Near Mint's video on it.
I don't know why this last thread said it was a glued binding. It is sewed, and opens up with a big eye.
He compares it to the Lucifer omnibus #2 binding. The negative is that it is so large that the 150 pages on each end do have some gutter loss on them.

Not him but: those HCs were limited edition and had a very small print run. DH recently reprinted Volume 1 only because it had under printed it, causing people who had the other volumes difficulty in obtaining it. If you check eBay you can find a bunch of fat TPBs that collect the same material for a fraction of the price as people have gotten rid of them.

Reading an old 2000 edition of From Hell.It's a bit twisted, but all the pages are there and it's legible. It's a testament to the quality of the whole thing since I'm vaguely aware of the spoilers, but am still captivated by the story.

Annoying question: is DC going to finish their current reprinting of Transmetropolitan?

Local comic shop has V2-4 of the new printing which has 12 issues a piece and while I have the original first release trades for 1-24 (including the three issue first trade and nine issue second trade), I have #23-60 as floppies and never bothered to upgrade to trades for them. Should I buy V2-4 and pray I can locate V1 and that DC puts V5 out? Or just hunt down older trades?

Most likely, since if they stop reprinting it and let it go out of print, Ellis will just take it to another publisher.

IIRC Transmet still sells well as trades and while DC won't want to keep Ellis employed writing new stuff, they most likely don't want to lose the money his evergreen trades make. Especially if it gets made into a movie or tv show.

There is a longstanding meme that MacBeth is a cursed play, due to the fact that there was a lot of behind the scenes issues (actors and directors getting sick/dying) while putting on the play/performing the play that date back to the initial performances when Shakespeare first wrote it.

As such, if you are an actor, it's a meme that if you are directing a performance of MacBeth or performing MacBeth as an actor, you never say the play's name; just call it "The Scottish Play". Saying MacBeth while working on MacBeth will result in you or your fellow actors or anyone working behind the scenes on the play to get hurt, suddenly contract cancer or some other form of nasty disease/illness, or just drop dead per the "curse" associated with the play".

I've wanted to get into the Dick Tracy collections, but several of the more notable volumes (most notably the Pruneface volume) goes for $200-400 online. I've had to resort to grey market reprints or the old Harvey Comics reprints (like the special reprinting the Mrs Pruneface story) for most of my Tracy fix.

Plus, the Books of Magic is inexplicably the ONLY DC/Vertigo ongoing that never got a digital release on comixology, so all that is digital that exists is the first thick trade (Arcana + 13 ongoing issues), a Faerie miniseries, the books of magick elseworld, and the names of magic.
It's a really weird blindspot in their digital backlog

Depends. It's a super flawed collection in people wanted a definitive (and by definitive, ALL of the shit that the regular trades of the series always omit) omnibus with Genesis, Day of Judgement, ALL of the annuals and their X-Overs, and the one-shots from this period, collected with the main 125 issue series run. Not a Morrison centric volume, especially one missing the fill in stories.

Buy it now if you want, because I don't see it staying in print sine there is more money to be have doing a proper comprehensive reprinting of the series in omnibus down the line.

The book I got looks to be more of a collection of essays on the history and impact of Dick Tracy with selections chosen by the essayists. Mostly Gould, but a little of the later artists as well. I'd love to get the collections, but as you said, they're very pricey at the moment.

Basically in Hollywood, it's hard as hell to get an actor to agree to shave their head year round for the purpose of playing a singular role on a TV show. Because having to be bald year round means that you can't get work unless you wear wigs to hide your baldness, since your regular gig can't allow you to have ANY hair.

So to get actors to consent to this, you have studios giving those actors inflated salaries where they get paid two or three times what their costars are making; in the name of "compensating" the actor for lost income since they can't get work outside the show.

Example of this is the actors who played Bull on Night Court and the guy who played Lex Luthor on Smallville. Both got paid around the same of their show's lead actors to get them to agree to have shaved heads year round, to compensate for their inability to get sidework outside the series.

the impression I get from his and Robertson's "we never want an absolute version!" for years was on them trying to get DC to stop printing it. They eventually gave up and let DC do the absolutes since they kept the tiny trades slowly in print over the years.

Those first issues of Stray Bullets are fucking amazing, not only is Lapham a great visual storyteller but also a great writer as well. As crazy as it sounds, I think the Stray Bullets universe is fucking gorgeous beneath all the crime and gruesome shit that happens to the characters.

I've missed 2-4 progs since covid. I get refunded and digital edition for free but had to buy them online elsewhere.
Sometimes going to brick and mortar is the best idea but I've got a 2 year sub for meg/prog

Found these as well and decided to pick them up too since they were cheap. I've been meaning to get into this webcomic for a while anyway. I'm not sure if I'm alone on this, but I really love it when webcomics get published physically. It just feels like owning something that maaaaybe shouldn't exist. Almost like it's an old artifact or something you actually have to dig for in order to find. I can't get enough of this shit, no matter how poor of an investment it might be.

That's all for tonight, but I'll be heading back tomorrow. Any suggestions for things to look out for based on what I've picked up?

Just one of my favourite comocs is major bummer, but I wouldn't say it's a great comic if it makes sense.
It has everything I love, silly over the top characters, cheesecake, nice art, and it's not decompressed like modern comics.

That said I would recommend it, so long story short I'll download the first volume of one piece and give it a shot.

Your mileage may vary considering the story has been ongoing for a quarter century, but the length is one of OP's strengths rather than a flaw as it allows for long-term storytelling and nice accumulative world-building the likes of which I've never really seen in comics.

Long continuous canon isn't an issue. dredd has been going 40+ years and is all canon with no reboots, and I love that. It's how they tell stories.
I don't mind long narratives. My issue is stuff like batman can take 6 issues to tell a 1 issue story with little actual character development.

It takes a minute to pick up speed, but by the time Nami gets her focus story, you should be hooked.
And after that it just keeps getting better. It's almost at 1000 chapters, and he's coming into the home stretch, so lots of plot threads started long ago are coming up again.
Mind you, this home stretch is likely longer than Luffy's arm can stretch.

Luffy seems pretty static, but he shows his growth regularly. Still waters running deep.
The rest, honestly don't grow a hell of a lot outside of their own dedicated arcs.
For instance Robin. When she joins after Alabasta, you might like her and how aloof she is for a while.
But once her turn comes, you're going to cry. I've got tears welling up just thinking about it, it's that good.

I started reading these in paperback until I got volume three a few years back cheap. Then paid about £40 each for 4&5 in December and then April, and got a similar sort of price on ebay for the other two to round off the set.

I only found out about the logos changing early last month or something, and it really lit a fire under me. I've been buying them slowly for years at this point, only buying one when I had extra cash or when I saw a sale on a site, got one or two as birthday presents... but I only had one left at that point and I knew that it'd annoy the shit out of me to have only one that's the odd one out with the logos.

I was really goddamn nervous about getting a new version since I ordered it online, so much so that when it arrived with a smudge on the cover and excess glue at the top etc(it had obviously been returned by someone else, who left the smudge) I took a 20% price cut rather than risk getting the new version if I returned it for a new one. Hopefully the glue issue doesn't portend future problems with the binding.

I could never get the old Absolute Death though, only got that now that it got reprinted. But my 'tism doesn't mind the logo being different on that one, since it's technically not Sandman.

A while ago there was someone that was creating threads as soon as the previous one died. In a few days it got so bad that most regulars "auto-banned" the thread and stopped coming around for a month or so. After that it went back to a thread a week

The real problem is /co/ is too "fast" of a board. This thread alone hits page 8-10 all the time and requires bumps. 90% are from cartoon threads alone (mostly shit waifu ones). We need a separate comics board so /shelf/ can keep pace with storytime threads and actual comic discussion, similar to /lit/.

That would be a great solution, there really isn't a good place to discuss comics like /shelf/. Most other pages are way to cape centric. As you said this is one of the only place I know where you can talk about comics in general without people shitting themselves and trying to go back to capes/basic bitch "indie" books

Couldn't you fix it by changing something so certain threads stick around at the end of the catalog instead of getting deleted, if they have a "storytime" or "shelf" tag? Maybe it's because I know so little of how the site is coded that makes me think that'd be an easier fix than a new board.

This has never been a problem with shelf. Usually there is just enough conversation to keep it bumped. It dies. People wait 4-5 days. People have more hauls and stuff to talk about. I really don't get what the issue is wanting more. Earlier this year when the thread was more or less getting spammed we ended up with a series of autistic blowouts. Enjoy what you've got.

It's a complicated clusterfuck.

In Avengers #291-298, it was supposed to be the real Nebula. Simonson had a long multi-year story planned for his Avengers run about Nebula's quest to get ahold of a super weapon hidden in a time bubble and only a certain combinations of Avengers in a Quinjet coud enter. This tied into Reed and Sue joining the team, as they were part of the roster that ultimately gets inside the bubble.

The whole thing got fucked over when Walt was told that, he couldn't use Sue/Reed in Avengers after all and had to write them out as soon as he added them to the roster. Walt was pissed as he only agreed to write the Avengers if he could use the two, so Englehart was tossed off of FF after being made to write Sue/Reed back onto the team and Walt given the book.

Walt then got screwed over by John Byrne, who wanted to use Nebula but didn't want to deal with the fall-out from the Simonson story. So he had Nebula, in Avengers #314-318 deny being the Nebula that She-Hulk and Thor fought months earlier.

So Simonson was screwed over, even as he planned his first "proper" FF story (after writing a three issue arc that was drawn by another guy) as writer/artist to resolve the Time Bubble arc. As such, he had the FF (plus Thor and Iron Man, no She-Hulk in sight) enter the Time Bubble but in a Reed designed vehicle, not a Quinjet as previously established. He also kept calling Nebula "Nebula" when he had her show up in the story, but half-assedly also made an effort to imply she was a fake impersonating Nebula and that she was some sort of succubus that was impersonating Nebula. Meanwhile Jim Starlin took over Silver Surfer and declared Nebula wasn't related to Thanos at all and burned her/made her the job guy at the end of Infinity Gauntlet.

So in the 1992 Avengers/FF Annual X-Over arc, writers decided to resolve the clusterfuck they made. They made "Nebula" be Ravonna, which contradicted everything Simonson wrote for the character in #291-298 and that she was an evil divergent of Ravonna who was brought back to life by the Grandmaster and went evil when she found out that Kang opted to try and kill the Avengers than use the power he gained via beating Grandmaster in battle, to resurrect Ravonna.

(Meanwhile a second good girl version of Ravonna was running around shacking up with Immortus and who was rescued when Kang found Immortus's lair one day and used the technology to split time and rescue Ravonna from being shot in her first appearance).

Adding to the confusion is that there was a 1993 mini that outright stated that Nebula IS a version of Ravonna, granted a divergence of her though this made no sense especially since by that time, Ron Marz had shown Nebula's childhood which did not match whatsoever with Ravonna's character (mainly that she was always blue and that she grew up in poverty with a sexually abusive father Nebula murdered as a kid).

Then Kurt Busiek implied that Immortus's Ravonna and the 90s Ravonna were the same people and killed them off (and off-panel at that) in Avengers Forever, which contradicted the above mentioned mini showing Immortus/Ravonna dying in order to force evil Ravonna to free Kang from stasis and take him back so they could be together.

Also, the Kang Council was just that: cosplayers. I think it was Simonson taking a shit on Roger Stern fucking up Kang's continuity by declaring every Kang that appeared between Avengers #71 and Avengers #269 were temporal doubles and not the "real" Kang. Which is hypocritical given that Simonson intended a similar continuity fucking of Doctor Doom had he not left FF when he did.

There is a lot of material that was missing in the standard issue trades. The Annuals, X-Overs, Question Quarterly, Brave and the Bold '93 and the various one-offs done by O'Neil in the 90s.

When they finally re-issue Question, the best solution to the format issue would be to do the HC Deluxe edition format and include all of the shit that was skipped, in it's proper reading order.

IIRC it was supposed to be remastered when it was scheduled to be a huge omnibus, but the decimation of the collections department made that impossible and IIRC test shots of the unrestored art blown up to omnibus size looked garrish and ugly, so they slashed it down in size to a deluxe HC and released it unremastered.

Because they don't have a trades department and they see walking dead, saga and other image compendiums and think that is a good idea and would solve their huge drop off of sales between vol 2-3 of long page count books if they only need to drop 2 volumes. And compendiums are cheaper than omnis so save money and 'more people will buy them if they're cheap'.

Yeah; there is a lot of stuff that was printed to cash in on the success of the 1996 series that has never been reprinted and while a lot of it was forgettable cash grab crap, some stuff like the Zarieul mini Paradise Lost, the Annuals (especially the crossover Annual storylines Ghost and JLApe) have never been reprinted. Plus, for completion sake, having Day of Judgement and Genesis and the "death of Wonder Woman" in the Byrne WW run included, especially since JLA #10 was a stealth lead-in to Genesis and ends on a cliffhanger as the Genesis wave hits Earth and how issue #11 takes place about a month after the fact as far as Diana's death and Genesis happening between issues.

House of Mystery is going to take about 5-7 volumes to collect everything from #174-321. I'd argue that HOM has the better stories, but HOS had better covers plus first Swamp Thing.

Anon, collected editions take work and management. What to collect/mapping, how many volumes, retouching/restoring/recolouring. People need a decent set of knowledge of the comics to do this. The reason why DC don't sell as much as Marvel is in part due to mismanagement of it. We have shit loads of Conan books or PAD Hulks solicited. Shit comes out. And DC have had a lot of problems with that. It has lowered consumer confidence in them. Look at this thread. Some people have Books of Magic and just as many are mad about how big it is (and possibly unstable). Collected editions departments also have to manage printing, where it gets printed, quality. You're simplifying it far too much. If it was as easy as you think then there would be no issues.

I don't feel as if either DC nor Marvel are worth supporting. I only buy more DC books because they release most of the stuff I wanted to buy for my collection. Oh no doubt. Don't take my criticism of DC as saying Marvel can do no wrong. Marvel make stupid decisions like omnibus editions that leave out issues to be *creator* centric. But I will say that Marvel has better consumer confidence. I mean fuck me, 6 savage sword of conan omnis so far? Epic line isn't liked by yourself but is massively popular. The epic and omni lines have been selling more and more. In my opinion the best DC stories far outstrip the best Marvel ones. But Marvel has done a good job in some areas. Sure epics are all over the place but DC regularly solicits something (like Aquaman by PAD) and gives up after a few books. So now consumer confidence is so low that people won't buy a volume 1 DC book like Green Arrow by Mike Grell omnibus because they worry if they will ever get a volume 2. Do you see what I mean?

Lack of leadership and accountability to put out a good and consistent product. The sad thing is it also reflects the current state of the movies in that you can have lesser known Marvel characters be in movies and with DC you can't.

They need to stop trying to play catch up and make decisions and plans on how to fix their business. Right now though it seems like AT&T simply have no care for comics aside from the characters potential in movies/mercandise. So the future doesn't look bright. Comics isn't the only industry with this problem, movies, tv, and video games all have this same issue. Everyone always says the same thing, you like it buy it, but sometimes it's not available in the format you want.

I'd definitely agree on that. They give fans what they want while DC fans have to outright beg for something to be released, only to be disappointed when DC cancels some collected books two or three months prior to release.

DESU the fans of omnis have been increasing a lot. Marvel were bad in the past but reprints have been getting better. And they are upping the print runs now. Just these things take time as they are obviously done ages in advance. So they have been improving over time. They do seem to listen to the fans in what they want. The fact that Annihilation got a reprint and now Annihilation Conquest is, speaks to that.

Yeah that is the main thing. I want to dabble more with DC omnis but it is eh. Even the books that have been completed like the Luficer omnis, I have reservations about them.

They can't get me to jump on the ship when they release +1000 page behemoths. It's virtually impossible to read those without a table and without gutter loss. I do understand why they would rather print a 1500-page book instead of 2 750-page books but I just can't. The Marvel Knights (blue-yellow-gray-white) Omni is perfect in length and many books should follow that approach imo

It’s well printed and for an omnibus it’s an extremely manageable size to read. That particular volume took about halfway through to get really good in my opinion. The first half was a bunch of campy Lee/Ditko stories trying to figure out who Strange even was and what to do with him, but once they got their rhythm the stories got much better.

All items that someone might possess, but none ever in a published DC volume.

I think I've dun fucked up, boys. I bought the reprint of the Absolute Death online earlier in the year but things got busy so I never actually took it out of the plastic. Today I finally did and I found out the linen or whatever you'd call it is cut wrong, so it's got a curve to it on the cover instead of going straight. There was also a bump or something on the inside of the cardboard holder thingy, so it left a line in the linen when I slid the book out. Do you think that's something that'd still fit under warranty even though I didn't check it when I first bought it? It's not like I could have done it to it myself. I suppose I could wait until after Christmas and pull the "I bought it for a present and so obviously I didn't unwrap it before giving it".

I was surprised there even was a linen cover thing. With how the back looks I've just gone all this time assuming it'd look exactly like the Absolute Sandman books with the full leather. Anyone have a reason why they switched it up? Is it just the reprint that has that, or was the original the same way?

I currently have the BoM omni sitting in the amazon box (I'm canadian, we don't have a lot of options) quarantining it in the basement because the warehouse had a covid outbreak. The box felt like it had zero packing in it, so I fully expect that giant omni to be broken when I eventually open it.

If I'd bought it from Amazon I'd have opened it right away, because I don't trust those savages to ship any book right. I bought this from them, which weighs over four kilos despite being pocket-format books. It's like the covers are made from lead. But Amazon shipped it in a slightly too-large box made from weirdly weak cardboard, with some brown paper thrown in to fill it out. Maybe the box wasn't even weak cardboard, it might just have been pummeled into weakness by the bouncing of the collection, since the paper obviously did nothing to cushion it or keep it in place. Absolute madmen.

It wasn't $2.50, but I saw they had the whole series of Batman Beyond and decided to pick that up as well. The inside of the season 2 case was a little damaged, but the discs are always in good condition.

On a side tangent, I can't stand when the formatting for books or DVDs in a series isn't uniform. The case for season 2 is twice as wide as the ones for seasons 1 and 3 because it has twice as many episodes and it really irritates me.

Damn those Batman Beyonds are a good snag. Venture Bros too, I’ve never seen them that cheap. Sealab, ATHF and Southpark are pretty common, I got my Sealab for around the same.

Season 2 ATHF is shit. Not because it’s bad, but if I recall that’s the one where one of the discs doesn’t have a play all (deliberately as a joke) and that’s such a huge pain in the fucking ass for 13 minute episodes.

It was literally last year I realised I could just pirate a few issues and see if it was for me.

I'm sure their are Fox employees with long term knowledge and skills who were let go by Disney. Not that this would necessarily impact Marble.

And I'm not going to touch Diamond other than the direct market was a mistake.

I don't think they make as many mistakes per se, but the bad perception is there. And the higher profile fuck ups with certain books adds to it.

This was more in regards to the rumour they wanted to cut their floppy line to a manageable number post Future State that would consist of a few big hitters then just Batman books.

Historically the Direct Market saved comics from distributors not paying them. And sure, the Diamond monopoly has been bad for comics but cutting Diamond in the middle of a pandemic was the biggest mistake.

They don't own Astro City, and no longer have publishing rights to it. If you check comixology, none of it is available digitially anymore.
Busiek literally waited the clock out by not releasing a new OGN, so publishing rights came back to him.
But also, AC did not sell very well. They kept it going because it sold okay by Vertigo standards, but those were way lower, and there is evidence that it sold poorly in trades too. The last couple trades went straight to HC instead of paperback in an effort to recoup costs.

Busiek clearly has plans to take it somewhere else, like Image or Dark Horse. But he will also have to convince them that it is worth it to print new trades/omnibuses. Image has rejected lots of collections in the past based on the sales data that the creatives provided (Prophet).

I generally try things before buying them about 70% of the time. Blind buys are usually from discount bins. Biggest blind buy was 7 Soldiers and I was kinda disappointed in it. Some stuff is decent but overall I just felt very meh about it

This arrived today. The last copy in Aus I could find for a reasonable price so I snapped it up. I really like it. It's pretty short but the whole thing is written and drawn as if it's some long lost recently re-discovered comics. With stuff like 'missing' parts or worn and ripped pages. Apparently there's a similar Donald book as well but as far as I can see that ones never been translated into English.

I remember how I got these books. I was visiting a friend when I got the message they were at the post office and had to go there without a proper bag big enough to carry them in. It was raining and I had to carry a package with all three of them in it. I needed both hands for the package and stuffed my umbrella in my small backpack so it covered me without me needing to hold it in my hands. I walked for an hour and a-half like that because by then I refused to take the bus out of principle.
The books were worth it btw

Atlantis Chronicles is great, but there will not be any more PAD volumes. Book 3 was announced then cancelled.
Even when the movie came out, NONE of the PAD volumes made it on the Diamond Top 500 orders that month.

Those collections are all pretty short and are hardcovers. Being a HC, they can charge another $15 for it to keep profits higher. Stuff like DOAP already had older files prepared that they just re-used.
You'll just have to trust me, but the Diamond LCS numbers were not very good for the PAD volumes, or the single Sword of Atlantis trade. All of the poor sales is why the Silver Age omni got cancelled.
