Hahaha, but forreal, AT handled its makeshift plot surprisingly well for most of its run despite the show’s general adherence to the status quo. It wasn’t until the final season that practically every potentially interesting plot thread was put on the back burner for some asspull Uncle Gumbald “final battle” instead. The Fern/Grass Sword eps were interesting, all three miniseries were cool, the slow progression of finding a cure for Simon’s MM+S seemed promising albeit unpredictable, and everything in between was fun. The last half of S9 was such a weak send-off to an otherwise solid series.

It wouldn't have been as bad if they didn't have Finn act completely and totally out of character for it, or if they had Flame Princess not hook up with the literal retard joke character. This was the first true sign that the writers either did not understand Finn or had open contempt for him, likely both.

Agreed, the last season was probably the weakest, which is a shame. In their defense, they got cancelled with 4 episodes to go. It wasn't supposed to end with the gum war.

Breezy was a beautiful episode. I loved the mythological like vibes it had. People are just mad cos he didn't get a robo arm, even though that would only be a superificial change versus the emotional symbolism of the grass arm.

Apparently the BMO and Obsidian specials were from ideas they had for the final season. I'm guessing Wizard City too, because it would be weird if they planned to leave peppermint butler like that.

Osborne talked about how they probably would've done more with Sweet P, Susan, and Gumbald in the final season, but they didn't have it all planned out. The original 4-part season finale written by Herpich had something to do with mole-people.

I along with most of the fandom lost interest from this episode because Adventure Time always had this promise of plot progression in some form, but after this episode it felt like they were never going to keep that promise and I lost interest.

Ironically after this they realized their mistake and some time later the series became heavy with plot progression and they stopped applying status quo to everything. I watched a handful of these episodes, but I never kept up with the series like I used to after Breezy.

its like nobody on co understood what was the last scene about, with finn regaining the love of himself as the love of being a hero. My disappointment comes that from that stand-point, writers never bothered to develop him more deeply. In the last seasons Finn feels like a secondary character.

The screencap in question was taken from a video SmallBu shared as part of their Tumblr post explaining the process of their guest animation work for "Beyond the Grotto," but it looks like their old Tumblr page has been wiped from history: https://twitter.com/smallbustudio/status/747504205259243520

Those notes in red were probably the main funny takeaway from their corrections over the board drawings.

That's because Sugar fucked with the core identity of the show to pair her lesbians together, she introduced Flame Princess as a sort of replacement but immediately thrust her into a happy relationship with Finn, all these changes are what you usually do at the very end of a show, and maybe Sugar was hopeful it was the end, but it ended up going for another 7 seasons and the writers had to make do with what remained of the prematurely wrung out story. This resulted in status quo restoring episodes like Frost and Fire and derailing Finn as the protagonist of the show since you couldn't really take him anywhere anymore.

Nope, not true. Rebecca Sugar was still boarding on the show, and “I Remember You” hadn’t even premiered yet. AT remained in the public consciousness until late S5/early S6, but it was a double-team between Gravity Falls and Steven Universe that ultimately made AT irrelevant.

The black pill that's hard to swallow. I'd give Sugar departing to SU some credit as well (even though it stinks). Once GF got full swing, people were sick of the status quo and shitting on Finn shenanigans and the ratings started to dip to levels that would've gotten any other show cancelled.

See, that’s the difference between a chill creator who essentially oversees everybody’s work and encourages different ideas versus a workaholic creator with a strict vision they want to guide everyone toward. I still enjoyed most of latter-day Adventure Time, but Adam Muto’s leadership did kinda suck some of the life out of the show. It became simultaneously too tame and alienating.

Within the first few episodes honestly. Steven Universe wasn’t a thing yet, and Gravity Falls had already outshined Phineas and Ferb with its series premiere. Maybe “Summerween” was the one that gave the show a boost; that had cute twin shenanigans AND the show’s first truly creepy monster design.

We tend to forget that in the 2011-2013 period, Adventure Time was absolutely spamming episodes off of an assembly line cloning vat. Like seasons 2 and 3 alone premiered within one year. I think that's just too much. Viewers get fatigued when there is so much and yet nothing is actually going on. Gravity Falls was more of a slow burn in comparison (it took over a full year just to air season 1), partly because The Manlet™ was a control freak who overworked himself and partly because Disney sat on episodes and let the show breathe a bit.

Tbqh I always thought this, CN couldn't just cancel their "star" show immediately but you can notice how there's a decline in the amount of eps of each season from S5-6 to S7-8 and the last "two" don't have more than 20 eps, I'm surprised how the writers didn't see this pattern and expected another season before getting cancelled with only a few eps left

Part of that is, early on 2010s CN had pretty much nothing but Regular Show and Adventure Time (And Gumball, but that was CN Europe). The ratings for AT were higher than GF's during its second season. A bunch of GF episodes dipped below 1 million whereas no AT episodes did during that same time period, despite having over double the number of episodes. I wouldn't say that AT was more popular at that time, just that ratings aren't reliable as an indicator of popularity anymore.

If you look at the google trends, AT was getting FAR more interest, like 4x as much, during GF's first season. It wasn't until the second season that GF came close to the height of interest AT generated at its peak. This is the opposite of what you'd expect judging off ratings alone.

Most people don't watch shows on TV anymore, they watch them online - legally or otherwise.

There were only 9 seasons production-wise. The 8th was 26 episodes. Then CN decided to chop up 7/8 to make another season, just so they could say there were 10 seasons.

Presumably there were talks with the network, and they were led to believe they would get another. I think given how the final season went though, they must've had some fear of being cancelled. Muto talked about how they made it so that the episodes prior to the finale could function as final sendoffs for the characters, which checks out.

If you had half a brain, you’d know not to take everything presented in the show so literally. Rebecca Sugar has said multiple times that fusion isn’t strictly romantic or sexual; it’s represents the bond between two or more characters, be it romantic, familial, or otherwise. The show’s message was revolves around love and the many different kinds there are. Steg was just a cool rock musician because the guitar has always played a big part in Greg’s bond with his son.

the show slowly declined in quality after season 6-7 but had a lot of great episodes peppered in all the way til the end.

BMO special was good

Bubbaline special was bad. it was just ameaturish from start to finish. and the people that wrote and boarded it totally failed to capture bubblegums character. The love montage was the best part and the rest was just bad to watch and i very much wanted to enjoy it. 1/10 NOT adventure time quality storytelling

At times, yeah. Like, I get the relationship has made her softer, but it did feel a bit ooc at times. Could've used some more of that trademark PB sass. I liked the part where she wanted to one-up Marceline - that was totally on-brand. Also the part where she was excited to kill the dragon.
