Up until the 18th century the most widespread way of communicating over long distances was basically a dude on a horse. The most frightening thing all over europe were the tatars and mongols, people who had very horse-centric societies.
They're majestic, strong, docile and versatile. Humanity as a whole owes a lot to horses. We wouldn't be where we are without them.
