What type of stories/characters do men like?

I'm a (female) artist and want to rebrand, making my art, including my next comic, appeal to men. What type of settings/stories/characters do men like? Are they into historical fiction or sci-fi more? Should I avoid romance plots?
Any help appreciated.

Definitely cut back on the romance plots and explicit "softer" emotion exploration and focus more on how the characters interact with the world, their struggles and actions, as well as implied and "harder" emotional stuff. Going from the popularity of Shonen, anything to do with improvement and competition will work

Medieval stories.
Not in the sense of "big castles and guys with swords", but rather stories with clear hierarchies, well-defined characters, a pure romance as in the old chansons, and a good and natural order that controls the world (and perhaps an evil and tyrannical order to complement it).
Complexity is hard to do right, and even when it is simple stories tend to do the same thing better.

Contrary to what a lot of /co/ seems to believe, men are diverse. I different tastes to pretty much any anon I've ever read explain 'what men want'.
I (a man) like both historical fiction and sci-fi, but thing both genres are usually poorly executed. I'm a pedant and find that historical fiction is often based on very poorly researched views of the past. If you want to write a story in generic, Hollywood-medieval land, you might as well put it in a wholly fictional setting, instead of irritating people with all your anachronisms.
With both settings, I like stories that make you think about what it might be life to live in a very different time and place, so I strongly dislike 'the present but with swords' or 'the present but with spaceships'; unless it's a light-hearted story played for laughs.
Anyway, consciously trying to appeal to an idealisef market is how you make soulless crap. Produce what interests you and hope there's a market instead.

I personally like 'big brother-little brother' relationships. They don't have to be actually related (in fact it might be better if they aren't), but they should have a platonic connection that is very STRONG and very impurrtant for them. You could have the big brother make a sacrifice for the little brother like Aiolos and Aiolia. Or have the big brother be kind of an asshole, but in retrospect, the little brother would realize that they did all that shit for them, or tried to do good for them despite themselves. Or maybe have both of them perish but in a way that makes it apparent that they were committed to each other and carried that love into their graves. Or maybe you could have a Gilgamesh and Enkidu story, where they adopt each other because the older brother have finally found an equal in the world, and the little brother's death inspires them to do something that's basically impossible, going against the heavens and all that.

In short: platonic love and brolationships are fucking awesome and manly.

It should be that they revere and respect each other to the utmost level, above all else, because romantic partners and sex comes and goes, people fall out of romantic love or get bored of sex with the same person all the time. But what they share together is so STRONG that it can not be broken no matter what. Be that gods or villains or bullshit plot, or whatever othe trial they would go through.

A level of dedication unmatched by any other, not to a body or physicalities or any other surface level detail. But instead, unconditional love for another person's soul.

read some manga, that should give you some clue but if you are too lacy for that I will give you the long answer.
Male characters should be cool and maculine, do not make them stupid and never make jokes at their expense at how stupid or weak they are unless the ridicule is done by another cool male character that is set up as a villian or antagonist that the protagonist has to overcome and beat up.
If the character is younger so between 14 and 20 he should be skinny buff so 6 pack is ok but his arms should not be ridiculously big.
Younger protagonist should also not have facial hair.
If you want to have an uber masculine bearded dude with huge muscles the character should be older then 30.
I think historical/fantasy is slightly more popular then scifi right now but both can work equally well.
You should have romance but make the girl be the one who is interested in the male protagonist, never have the male protagonist fight a female character and lose (unless it's like a really old looking woman that shows of authority and experience).
In fact the male protagonist should never be presented as inferior to a female character in anything he is the hero of the story afterall.
This point has mostly to do with the fact that modern stories love to ridicule and emasculate male characters to make women look "strong", it's way to overdone right now, so people will get turned of quickly and stop reading your stuff if you do that.

In case you are thinking about making the monster_girls/alien_girls just human_but_different_color or human_with_horns just to sexually appeal to men just don't. It would be considered uncreative and it would also be useless because you could put a tiger head in a female body and men would be like "damn, she's hot", inhuman things aren't necessarily ugly. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, nobody complained about Monet beating Luffy in One Piece. I think the problem comes from the west's fixation with making female characters who rely mainly/exclusively on physical strength.

Consequences. Especially permanent consequences for their actions. Semi-logical setting. You want powers or crazy sci-fi? great, but try and explain its basics otherwise it detracts and opens door for asspullery.
The building of something new, be this a ranch, nation, political party, family, whatever. Creation in general be hard coded into us.
Reliability, see pic related. A grounded character with just as many flaws as virtues. Sometimes they made the wrong choice, or just dont want to get involved with things. But when they do they see it through.

focus on stories that are driven by the story as opposed to the characters. far too many works of fiction present a character not nearly as interesting as the author thinks they are and then "explores" them while fuckall happens. This is known as character-driven fiction, and it's for women and gays. Story driven fiction, in contrast, pushes the events taking place into the forefront. It lends itself to characters with less depth but more agency, energy, and brevity. That's what makes a good story: characters making choices and generally getting shit done.

Good, first talk to a lot of men

The setting could be anywhere you like. Just avoid traditionally girly settings. The story has to make sense and be according to men ideals. Comparing to women, we like a little less commitment but be persons to be trust and can defend themselves and their group. Give them a difficult but satisfying victory rather than a loss. The characters have to be the same as women stories, the kind of guy who you would like to hang out, but a lot less resentful. Watch MMA to get how we end up after a fight.

Is not necessary. As long as you give them a good reason to act the way they act, it's ok.

Men generally like "nobility" they like hero's who are in conflict with something that is objectively bad, and they like their hero's to struggle and overcome those things, either alone or as a small group, they tend to like their characters to have agency, but to have that agency be actively acted against.

Guts is a good example of this idea,he's a superhuman badass who kicks ass and takes names, but he's also struggling against odds that he has very little chance of overcoming, but he also doesn't let that stop him.

About romance it's more complex, I would say it's better to focus on a relationship that's already working or at least where there's not much of a chase, if you see romantic stories targeted to men a girl is a lot of times almost handed to the protagonist, not that I think that's good, bu a proactive girl is appreciated, it's even enough to just make them as already good friends, with stuff like a comfortable everyday life, shared humor etc.
Also, as cheesy as it may sound, we like to "impress" the romantic interest, no to the anime-harem extent where the protagonist breath and a woman falls at his feet, but the clichè scene when the girl is impressed by something plot relevant the protagonist do can feel really good, especially if the characters are working togheter

research still works, Fortinte is an excellent example of a game made with age-oriented research in mind and it pretty much ate the whole kids demographic that was distributed on minecraft / lol / pubg

it doesn't "work" on comics because comics aren't relevant to any modern demographic today. comic brands are sustained entirely by people who got exposed to them when they were kids themselves. Besides those the only people interested in the medium do it for the medium's sake.

So really, want a specific male demographic? make a fortnite comic. That's as far as you'll get in the medium.

hard disagree. Franco-Belgian scene has been shrinking for some years and any artist will admit it. They never really had or cared for their kids demographic, spirou and the rest were more subtle adult humour than kid humour.

Japan has also saw it's comic industry shrink albeit at a much slower pace.

Comics in the rest of the world are pretty much on death row.

One thing that hasn’t really been brought up in this thread is the power fantasy of capable characters. A character can be weak physically or a terrible person but it’s always essential (imo) for a main character to have some sort of experience/skills that make them entertaining to watch.

Like if you take the Mandolorian as an example, his formula is:
Dope Armor
Cool Gadgets
Expertise as a lifelong soldier/mercenary

Again, the appeal doesn’t have to be a physically imposing character like Conan the barbarian because appealing male character aren’t just about physical strength.

I don't know to what extend I can agree desu. I don't speak only on technical issues but also how public interests have changed.

New technologies and forms of communication also lead to new interests replacing the old ones. Comic interest in the USA collapsed in the 90s because videogames filled the same niche comics did (flashy action for kids) and pretty much expelled the medium from it's primary source of revenue.

That is old news already, but the digital era hasn't been too friendly to comics either. Like you said no way to generate revenue from the digital market really applies to comic production, but social media and the rise of the instant gratification system hasn't led people shift interest back to comics. People prefer short tidbits of animation or anything that can be consumed in full by their social media circles.

Music also has trouble coping with the digital era, but that's grounds for a completely different rant.

At its core most male stories focus on encompasing the concept of strength: physical or mental.
You might have a character whose developing to overcome the odds set against him or someone who needs to grow and mature mentally/spiritually depending on the scenario.
Historical stories set the tone that “it has happened before and you can do it” while futuristic setting is about challening what’s to come and throwing curve balls that challenge the norm.

Sometimes the tale is about the loss of strength and how it is returned or compromised due to age.

But in the end, it’s about the pursuit of one’s strength and how it is achieved.
