IT FUCKING HURTS. Is there ANY chance they can continue it? Seriously, the show still has so much more juice left in it and it's clear they're trying to take stuff further and further with actual overarching plots and changing the characters up.

I think this is probably the likely scenario especially since the HBO max head said they were working on it. The only thing that sucks is that show will probably in purgatory for years since it takes forever to come out with a season in normal circumstances.I’m not losing hope until Publick or Hammer dies

HBOMax is already trying to swipe it most likely in a publicity stunt to showcase HBO as some savior of Venture Brothers to get people to subscribe.

If anyone really thought a show with such a huge cult fanbase that is highly regarded among the animation community and critics would actually stay cancelled and not get immediately picked up by another service or network, you deserve to be swindled.

Why isn't Venture Bros. ever brought up when people discuss and compare popular adult cartoons? You always have your Simpsons, your MacFarlane toons, South Park, Mike Judge, and even Rick and Morty in recent years, but VB practically never gets a mention. Is the show's serialized nature really enough to alienate the average TV watcher?

If so, that'd be weird 'cause it's not like serialized TV shows are some new phenomenon popularized by streaming (Lost, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones), and people always rag on Rick and Morty for being so heavily stuck to its status quo. What do people even WANT?

Lack of advertising, lack of actually being fucking shown. I only picked it up because of a friend 3~ years ago. Before that, all I knew about the show was from the first 2 seasons which seem to be the only ones they actually played multiple times. New season comes out they show each episode once then it's gone for 2 years. If you weren't already a fan or someone who was recommended it, you're very unlikely to just happen on the show yourself. Not enough people are watching it even on here.

I thought the show had a relatively average budget since Doc & Jackson do most of the heavy lifting themselves. The credits imply a pretty small pre-production crew, and I can't imagine outsourcing to Korea for 8-10 episodes a season would be that expensive for [adult swim], right? Is it different because VB is one of the only existing Titmouse shows NOT animated in-house?

And why can't [as] just whore out the show with merch like they do Rick and Morty? Merch seems to help fund that show while also keeping it relevant during 2-year hiatuses.

Only 10 episodes get made like, every three years, and they all air in the span of two months.

I feel like the stigma against the animation medium's potential for more mature audiences also has to do with it. The Venture Bros. is easily one of the best-written TV series of all time while maintaining—and sometimes even surpassing—its own quality. I'm sure it would've been more mainstream and popular if American adult cartoons weren't still primarily seen as a vehicle for crass sex jokes, excessive language and violence, or gross-out shock humor without any attempt at deeper narratives. Plenty of live-action serials have done the latter and been heralded as TV classics for it.

Id say

A. It was very plot heavy after awhile so it is difficult to just find an episode to just watch unlike something like Rick and Morty.

B. A lot of the jokes and everything the show is based on is kinda forgotten about. Zoomers dont know what Johhny Quest was or any of those old Hana Barbara shows were. And boomers dont watch much AS and it really just leaves it to Millennials to carry the show.

C. As much as this sounds pretentious, the show and its humor is a bit more high brow? I am not sure thats the word but it doesnt go for the low hanging fruit of being loud and absurd and mean like other shows on AS or other networks.

It's not very brand-friendly.

You can't print the characters on cups and shirts, there are no cute mascots and one of the hallmarks is that the show changes status quo between each season.

Do animated series strictly only work if they're "brand-friendly," even when they're marketed for adults? It's ridiculous that capitalism has that much of a stronghold on commercial art just because it uses a more visual medium. Westworld and Better Call Saul don't need merch to stay afloat, but apparently Bob's Burgers and Rick and Morty depend on it to SURVIVE.

I'm hoping the rise of streaming encourages more entertainment companies to give adult cartoons the same success requirements that live-action shows do. I think BoJack did just fine by getting good viewer numbers and being talked about online.

I think it comes down to acessibility and re runs.Pre-streaming the only way you could follow the show is by either buying the DVDs(Which a newcomer to the series won't do) or piece together the show through them re airing episodes which is hard as fuck since AS rarely plays them in order.The show was a head of its time in so many ways but I think I've seen the fanbase grow with it being on HULU from my personal experince

I don't think knowing what johnny quest is has any real bearing on being able to enjoy the show even in the first season. I'd say the references are even easier to pick up since they love to throw in super hero parodies all the time, typically marvelshit, and the popularity of that has grown more and more. There are still a ton of weird references I don't get that happen all the time but I don't think it detracts from my enjoyment. Also i'm a zoomer and understand the johnny quest shit even though I never grew up with it.

Don't they LITERALLY do that though? I'd say the main cast is pretty brand-able. I'm pretty sure they had a whole shirt thing, they come up with custom logos and shit all the time that they slap on shirt for a monthly club thing or at least did.

For comparison's sake, it takes your most bog standard/garden variety showrunners a day or two to have their writers script and plan out an entire episode.
Jackson and Hammer would typically spend weeks close to a month just to do the writing.
Keep in mind this is just writing for the episode, they haven't even touched storyboards and animation.

The only reason why they had such clemency to do this was because Mike Lazzo was a tremendous fan of their work and believed in what they could pull off. When he finally 'retired' from the company last year the new executive in charge was restructuring the company after merging and acquisitions and decided to axe the show along with some others.

They did make Venture Bros toys. Whenever they did drop merch like t shirts and posters, I'm assuming they did it at cost. They shipped out the T-shirts weekly at a cost of $20 a shirt. That's pretty cheap. They also shipped out posters for the cost of shipping so they definitely lost money on that.

I disagree with C. Also B, I'm technically barely a boomer and I started watching Adult Swim when it first started. I think they have so few superheroes for a similar reason they have so few GI Joe style OSI agents. Mattel made so many GI action figures with whatever themes they could come up with that it was hard to make agents that wouldn't get them sued and there are so many wacky and gimmicky super heroes owned by marvel, dc, third party and independent publishers that it's hard coming up with something you can use without being sued and have them be useful enough to not just be a one off joke.

There's a ton factors, it usually depends on the showrunners and the format they're running with.
For the simpsons it takes a solid month to produce an episode while an episode of South Park can be created and pushed out in 5 days.
On top of that on average most shows have a team of 6-10 writers who pitch ideas to the director who then consults the storyboard artists who then cycle feedback through the staff writers.
Even an average run of the mill production crew can effectively write an episode of show in one day.

South Park is the only documented TV show to have hashed out scripts in 1-2 days each. Doesn't work that way. They're clones. In the test tube or not, they always age. If Rusty had never got the slugs all killed back in season 3 and still had them, they would also be 18 because that was when Rusty made them all. And even if he could stop their aging whilst in the tubes, why would he even bother? Every time the clones died and were replaced with fresh slugs, they'd only be receiving the memories of what was downloaded from the last time they were in the learning beds since the beds record their memories every time Hank and Dean slept in them. As slow as the boys may be, even they would eventually pick up on miraculously being vastly younger than what they remember the "previous night". So even if Rusty did keep the slugs physically at 16, it'd be awfully pointless to do so. Even for him. So yeah, the slugs aged right along with the ones outside of the tubes.

In actual truth, the real reason is that they just didn't find much to do with Orpheus and the Triad, even in the director's commentary of Season 7 they talk about how they agreed with fans that they wanted more out of Orpheus and Co but at the end of the season they just couldn't find much for them to do.

I finally caught up with all seven seasons. Fantastic show. I haven't read all of it but there's a really good art book thing that literally goes through the entire series up until season 6, highly recommend. The show is pretty much written season by season but I assume S6 and clearly S7 is when they actually start writing shit with future seasons in mind.

The reason it works is because you only have 2 writers and they're big nerds and are fans of their own work so they're able to go back through older episodes and remember shit and cleverly write it into newer episodes. The attention to past details and the way to add context to previously throwaway lines and episodes is something you can ONLY do with a small team of writers. It's extremely impressive and partly why I wish the show got more attention.

Sure, Simon was a young, impressionable child whose years of brainwashing led to his demise, but he and Grace represent the two paths a person with baggage and bad history can take: Grace being the one who listens to others and makes an effort to confront her personal issues, and Simon being the one who doubles down on his toxic beliefs no matter how many second chances he's given. I liked the episode where Al was working as Hank's detective sidekick and everything with Al and shore leave. Honestly the cast is huge, I think they mostly do everyone justice considering that. The order are secondary supporting cast, they are present enough, I'd say.

I figured the boys birth year is anywhere from 1987-1990. In the episode where they’re kidnapped by Myra, she mentioned something about them being 19, and then earlier in the season during their 16th birthday, Hank mentions the birthdate on their ID not matching their ages.

Who knows how many times they’ve died or when their first death even was for their ages to be 3 years off.

Yes, I went there after seeing it on VB and it's very close to the show. You enter the building which is just this one doorway and a lady at a reception stand. Then you walk forward to the elevator in the dark where a guy in a ninja costume pops out and scares you screaming, "Welcome!". He takes you one floor lower and they usually try to get in as many ninja jumpscares throughout as they can. They kind of do things similar to Jekyll and Hyde restaurants where the waiters will just randomly do little cheezy ninja battles in the hallways. They also have these little holes in the walls of some of the tables covered by cloth art where the ninjas will pop out their hands with stars and scream Kung Fu sound effects. They don't scare you as much once you have your food though, I assume they're worried people will get freaked out and knocked over their food. Most of the menu is seafood.

I find it very easy to believe. Jonas, from the audience's perspective, is famous for cutting corners. It's completely in character for him to have ignored that. Especially if it was during a point where he hadn't thought yet to rig up the learning beds to a mainframe to upload and download memories for backup clones. Which he might not have until Rusty was too old so he couldn't justify Rusty suddenly going from a kid to an infant in the blink of an eye.

The Rusty clone we know throughout the show has always been a single clone, likely the very first clone made by Jonas Sr. when the original Rusty died (whenever that was and for whatever cause). This clone was conclusively "born" in 1965. Likely given that Jonas had not developed the means to record and imprint synaptic data at a crucial time, he could never implement backup Rustys and thus actively had to keep the clone we know alive the entire time because he'd never be able to explain why his kid suddenly went from being a child to being an infant. Thus leading to Rusty's adulthood being a PTSD wreck of a person from having to survive a traumatic childhood. Something that Rusty has been able to avoid with his sons because when he inherited the Venture estate, Jonas and Ben had already perfected the cloning tech and made a shitload of Hank and Dean backups.

Those coupled with the radiation is probably what triggered it. He still takes the Nomolestol but the tits are gone and went away sometime after the radiation spiking on the compound ceased.

No. That in itself makes even less sense. The whole point of the ceremony that the Shapeshifter was trying to showcase was that the Ventures were the "true" Sovereign line. I.E., that the Shapeshifter was, up to that point, not the true Sovereign at all. Which therein would mean that Dean couldn't be the Shapeshifter's heir to the title because the Shapeshifter "never" had the title to begin with. Like, you don't appoint your heir to your title so that they can abdicate the title back to you. That's just plain silly.

But, in the end, the whole thing was a farce anyway. When the GCI was founded, their charter showed no Sovereign position to begin with. That position developed sometime between it's founding to when Force Majeure became Sovereign seeing as he was the Shapeshifer's predecessor. Bringing in the Ventures is because Lloyd Venture was the grand protector of the Orb, which is probably the closest thing to a Sovereign The Guild, the preceding organization that the GCI spawned from, had. It was all just a show to get Hamilton to simmer the fuck down and apprehend him.

There was never any doubt he was a piece of shit. Even at his nicest he was still using his kid to test theme park rides. The only change is learning the depths of his douchery.
Though I still don't know if he actually fucked Malcolm's mom because what little we see of her seems like she wouldn't be down for that. But Jonas has the charisma to rope people into all sorts of terrible shit.

They didn't know what they exactly wanted to do with the show beyond the parody so must episodes are just "problem of the week" as we learn more about the characters and they throw in inklings of an overarching story and plotline. Brock definitely becomes less violent but you can kind of handwave it as it being like a year after brock was with them and was still treating it mostly as a job

I think there's also the issue that the only girls who get a decent amount of porn are also the only girls who get a major role.
It's also a pretty niche show all things considered.
A lot of porn artists work on the basis of demand either because it's what's commissioned or drawing what's popular gives you some of that popularity.
So there's just not a lot of demand to draw a character that was in one episode/scene of a show that aired every four years and with a loyal but small fanbase.

She’s fine as a contrast to how socially awkward the boys are, but that’s about it.

Season 5 was too confined to the preexisting lore, limiting the writers, while season 6 did a soft purge on the lore moving us to a new location!

That and The season essentially being a monarch character study made it one of my favourites seasons up to date

I think that's the fun with him. Looks like a side character, is even only called Pirate Captain but he ended up being pretty important to the Venture operations. It's like when you get some mercenaries you can't train in an RTS and some of them just stick around for ages because they don't die.

I was reading through the art book the other day and thought it was interesting how they basically went straight into production of season 4 after 3 was finished. Because Jackson and Doc were so burnt out (especially Jackson), they had to ask for a break in production. I think Jackson said that he had an idea planned for a final episode had season 4 been the last, but realized he wasn’t ready to end the show yet.

I really admire how much they genuinely care about the show. Most creators don’t seem to give a fuck after a few seasons.

I didn’t like Dermott at first either, but he definitely felt very real after a while. He’s that one kid who makes up a bullshit story about everything and anything to seem cooler than he actually is.

I liked Sirena a lot, but wish they could have at least shown some more development between her and Dean. The most I remember them having in common was being completely fed up of their fathers’ shit.

People always ask if you need a thorough knowledge of classic superhero comics and adventure cartoons to "get" Venture Bros., but I'd argue you'd be more alienated by all the musician/band references. Jackson and especially Doc know their stuff. The fact that the series is almost entirely written by them means THEY'RE the ones making all these references.

Obviously the storytelling, character dynamics, and comedy still stand on their own, but I did have to Google a bunch of obscure or forgotten bands name-dropped throughout my binge.

The thing is that it would be less of a question if Red Death can carry a show and more so "Can the Guild carry a show?", since it would basically be all Guild talk all the time. Some would say that already happens in the show, but I'd say if you cut out the Ventures and the other organizations, the Guild itself isn't as exciting.

How quick they fucked makes sense when you think about it. They both go to some of the same classes and have relatable situations. Hank obviously shares the situation but he probably thinks it's awesome getting to see all of that action and wouldn't understand why serena would hate her father as much outside of the overprotection.
The most important thing to note is that hank is too awkward or afraid or w/e of having sex and obviously dean is virgin and he's never had a girl that was into her. There was the intern but remember that he completely forgot about that from the gas so mentally it's the first time he's had that experience.

I don't know if it was intentionally meant to make that much sense but it ends up being sorta realistic.

The only things I found weird were how they coincidentally managed to be in the same Botany class with no other students, and how it almost felt like Sirena tried to get an out for after being caught, while Dean immediately owned up. But knowing Doc & Jackson though, there’s probably no deeper reason in the end.

This is an extremely dense show for either the kind of person the producer is(a music geek that dabbled in comics, games and pop culture from a very specific time period) or people one-step-removed from them(a friend or family member that gets them). Try showing this shit to a foreigner that doesn't get the cultural references and they wouldn't have any idea what the fuck they are looking at.

The creators made this show for themselves, and as it turns out there are a lot of people that think like and experienced the same culture that they did as well. That they have any viewers at all is a blessing, because they certainly didn't set out to make a show with mass appeal.

Obviously you lose out on reference but I think the only real prior experience you need is an enjoyment for super hero shit even if you're not a huge comic book nerd. The show starts out as a johnny quest parody but it quickly becomes partly a deconstruction of the villain vs "hero" dynamic and if you're not super familiar with that you probably won't get as much enjoyment out of the show. I don't get half of the references quickly made in the episodes and I never grew up watching johnny quest or any of the other older shit they parody but I still enjoy the show a lot.

Since a big part of the show parodying 60s, 70s and 80s animation, it stands to reason successful merch would also parody toys from those eras.

It's not like merch doesn't exist, but it probably all falls back to the same problems of not enough marketing or funding behind the show.
That's part of why it took so damn long to get episodes made.

Do they have blu-rays of all the seasons? That's something I'd like to get. All I got are these old DRM-locked season 1-3 episodes from iTunes in shit quality.

Foreigner that hadn't ever even heard of Johnny Quest here, and I liked the show just fine. There were definite moments where I'd just space out and go "oh this prolly a reference to a thing i dont know" but the real meat of the show worked for me.
Like the other anon said I think it's more about 60s pulp and comics in a feeling level rather than knowledge one. It's like The Incredibles where it's parodying a whole thing but it's not necessary to get it, the show stands out on its own by its own merits.

Or I dunno maybe there is an extra layer of appreciation/enjoyment if you get all the references, but for me it wasnt that important desu

Didn't grow up with JQ either and am only barely familiar with most of the inspiration material for this show, and I agree 100%. It's less about the actual content of the references themselves and more about the feeling and atmosphere that they create for the VB world. Understanding the references is a bonus, but not at all a requirement to appreciate the show for what it is.
