Fusions, and Gems in general, sometimes had storytelling elements and logic but other times didn’t.
Most Gem non-Corrupted characters that got at least an episode who were from from Era 1 were prevalent or important in the west in the early bronze age to late iron age.
Garnet’s/Ruby+Sapphire have a LOT of built-in meaning. Rubies and sapphires for example are different colors of the same mineral, the only difference to humans being rarity and physically being the presence of a metal that is used in making steel that makes rubies red. So basically despite their social class differences Ruby and Sapphire are truly equals.
Garnets are not directly related to rubies and sapphires physically but have a LOT of varieties and symbolically represent a lot of leadership-related things, which is why Sugar made them planetary governors. Garnet is actually a Rhodolite Garnet
AKA Pink Garnet which has the added symbolism of spirituality and intuition to the leadership stuff, marking Garnet not only a leader but insightful/a prophet. Garnets also have similar structural composition to rubies and sapphires, and can be found in the same mining conditions.
BUT
We also have Malachite. Lapis is tied strongly to a few true things about lapis lazuli but most are not really factors sadly, and malachite has nothing to do with jasper or lapis in any way. Jasper has little to do with symbolic or physical jasper. People praised Sugar for how malachite turns toxic if left in water due to its mineral composition as well as its copper presence (rusting from orange to green) foreshadowing Jasper’s Corruption, but she said those were just happy coincidences and were not planned.
Most Corrupted Gems have simple symbolism where their monster form relates to an inversion of their supposed symbolic properties.
