It would just never cross my mind to expect an answer from contacting anyone like that. I once replied to a tweet by Neil Gaiman and thanked him for making his reading of a book available on youtube and I was even surprised at him liking the tweet as a response, because I'd assumed he wouldn't notice it.
Could I have been writing to/emailing authors asking them about things all this time, and not just gotten some copy-pasted fan letter response?
