Financial success, legitimacy for his thneeds as a product, getting one over on his naysayer family, his ego is being fed by validation and he refuses to back down from the Lorax's warnings because more than money he can't go without it, can't go back to being a nobody and a loser. But when the other tree drops he's quickly forgotten. I like that even more than simple avarice, which ends up being another tool he uses to pump up his pride
Also I really think the Lorax shouldn't have returned at the end, the idea that turning one town's attitude (on one given day) is enough doesn't sit with me. The Lorax should have been Eden, and humanity ate the forbidden fruit. The Onceler should live out his days never knowing whether his efforts were enough, nor the boy, and perhaps no one else in any generation. I like the return of the Lorax being less an achievement and more a benchmark. We will never see the Lorax and all of his friends come back, but so long as we do not forget, and do not fail entirely, the chance is still there. Does that make sense?
The Lorax showing up and the end to tell Onceler and the town and the audience that they've done good is too easy and cheap. The story was pretty bleak, and the uncertainty of its message getting cut out is one of the biggest offenses of that whole wretched monstrosity
