The whole plot was retarded and the lesson painfully predictable, but the trap escape plotline had some good moments. The training one was stupid from start to end.

Did anyone else not like how they made Dewey/Huey such pussies in this episode? I thought from the premise of it, they were going to be made to be more competent. Instead we were shown they were afraid of Webby and the training was considered too harsh. didn't sit right with me. I get that Webby is the hyper competent one. But did they have to make the other two ducks look so weak/useless?

Huey has been on and off characterization-wise this season. Ever since the first episode of season 3 where he was suddenly so competitive that he was willing to leave Violet for dead, he had moments where his character suddenly changes to suit the plot.

Nah, I think it's perfect. Think about it: the other triplets also have their own thing Huey's autism always forces him to do everything by the book no matter how tiring it is for everyone, Dewey always tries to be the cool kid with the cringy catchphrases no matter how tiring it is for everyone, and Louie is always the amoral asshole who tries to screw up everyone to profit from everything no matter how titing it is for everyone.
So Webby being a combat freak who casually talks about death and violence no matter how tiring it is for everyone is a thing that works.

Overall, it was a nice episode. Scrooge's side of the plot was definitely the strongest, with some of the best characters in the show playing each other nicely and delivering fun visuals and scenarios.
The subplot took its sweet time to get engaging; you know the boys are no match for Webby so you're just waiting for the plot to go somewhere beyond "big surprise she got them again".
Once she faces Beakley matters get more interesting, and the final revelation of this episode mattering big time for the season long arc was well appreciated. I'm cautious because the series has done great promising but not so good actually delivering, but we'll see. Glad the Phantom Blot's turn in the spotlight isn't gonna end with that risible debut in the Magica episode.

I have hopes for the First Adventure episode, with Donald and Della as kids under Scrooge's guidance. The last time we saw them in that age they definitely stole the show.

The big question is what's gonna be of Donald's voice now that Russi's gone; is it going to be replaced? Did they manage to get her lines read that far in advance? My hopes for how involved he will be are greatly lowered if he's not voiced clearly, given the show's track record. But I'm optimistic.

To be honest, that has been FOWL's strongest asset: we already know they are out there trying to do something bad, but we don't know exactly what because they are really good at covering their tracks.
In fact, Scrooge (and the audience) only knows they are out there because Bulba, Heron and Steelbeak were too dumb to keep the discretion facade.

Does that even register as an advantage on the boys' part? It's not like Webby's gloomy over such losses and it's not like she's entirely devoid of blood related family either, with Beakley there. Even if that last part turns out kaput due to some major twist later on, the show emphasizes family not as relying on blood but as those who are close to you.
Webby's strengths stand out because she's got next to no weaknesses that actually matter in the context of the show. Her social anxiety was supposed to be one yet nowadays she spends more time outside of the family circle than the boys do.

Dude, one of the first things the seris told us about Webby is that she never had a normal childhood and she still has zero skills to deal with other people, especially normal people.
The triplets like her a lot, they also know and understand what makes Webby tick like the way she doest and they still feel uneasy around her.

Being an ungodly killing machine amounts to nothing if at the end of the day you still can't have a normal life or people who likes you for what you are, warts and all. On the other hand, the triplets may be wimps but they always had their uncle, each other and now their mom and this means the world for them- in fact, the Halloween episode proved that every special moment they spent together is a treasure for them and the idea of eventually growing up and each of them taking separate ways fucking terrifies them.

The problem is they can't show the two well enough. Huey should've been more like Honker who would use nerd shit to battle. Compare to Louie that can avoid a situation or anticipate moves. What was the point of the first episode, period? About the only relevant thing it did was introduce Isabella Finch and the missing mysteries, which could've easily been tacked onto a subsequent episode. Ofttimes in Rosa's stories, these things just happen to him through no fault of his own, and Scrooge's exaggerated indifference to his plight is played for laughs, which is not funny; I don't think there's malice involved, exactly (he does sometimes give Donald notably heroic roles; eg, in "Return to Xanadu" and "The Quest for Kalevala"); I just think that Rosa has a blindspot to this one aspect of the Duckverse.

The previous season dedicated an episodfe to explain that Donald used to have a hair trigger temper but he took professional help to learn to get it under control to give a better life to his nephews, and ended up focusing all of his rage into a single thing, and that thing was his complete hatred against anything that could threaten his nephews' safety.
The moment his nephews are in danger, Donald's rage breaks free and so Donald breaks ANYTHING and NOTHING is impossible to him anymore. There's a reason why even a permagrumpy person like Penumbra holds him in a super high regard.

See I think the issue is that this series has gone too far in pushing the figure of Donald The Father to the point where there is very little else to him. He had his fatherly side in the comics and even the cartoons sure but that was just one aspect of who he was. Here you remove the nephews from the picture and he's almost empty.

I think it honestly should have been Donald stepping in doing better than his usual retard flailing, living up to Scrooge's earlier praise of being a great fighter. Webby gets a warm fuzzy moment being considered one of Don's kids and Beakley gets sense smacked into her by someone she's long belittled and underestimated. That's a good point, but again, only because DT17 chose to make him this way it doesn't mean it's the only valid interpretation. You could totally have him as a father in all but blood to the nephew who still has his characteristic wildness to him; it's not like DT17 has been shown Entirely bland, see stuff like his fight against Beakley early in the series or gleefully screwing Scrooge over in the Caballeros episode. My issue is that they forget to make him More than just Daddy Don. He can be too darned passive at times, to the point where I'm less convinced it's an attitude he would naturally have and more than this staff, enamoured with snappy dialogue as it is, sees Donald's voice as a roadblock to their wisecracks and chose to sideline him whenever possible.

So, am I the only one who got a strong vibe that Beakley is working with F.O.W.L.?

The beginning of the episode introduces the idea that the core cast will have a traitor, and then Beakley is shown to clearly have an emotional conflict of some sort.

F.O.W.L.'s goal to make the world safer but also more boring is something she might support, since he's a bit of a no-nonsense person herself. When she was a S.H.U.S.H. agent, she opposed the old F.O.W.L. But the new F.O.W.L.'s ideology is completely different from the old one, as Bradford keeps pointing out.

Compared to Webby I can understand being weak, but not stupid. It'd not even a gender thing like you phrase it either. Webby's characterization in the harp episode was retarded too where they swapped her out of nowhere into a kid who's never grasped the concept of lying and becoming disillusioned. The problem seems to be the writers only know stupid and weak as their main character flaws that are easy to show rather than the underlying causes and how'd they'd incorporate them against in this instance Webby.

I ha dfully expected Huey to try traps and the like, while trying to analyze her fighting styles, then eventually doing like he did in the Senior Woodchuck episode and jury rigging something imperfect that got the job done. Which could've gone great with him telling Dewey the sword was al lost cause and put a weapon more his size and easy to use in his hands. You know, team work and coordination between brothers. The more I think on it the less I'm liking the episode with how they did everything.

Me on the other hand, I'm glad that they actually broke that taboo of letting the mom only be a minor and/or flashback character, and put her in the show to be an additional member of the cast as well.
Future cartoons and comics involving the extended cast of Donald Duck will now feature her more often as well, which is good.

So after watching the episode. I think Webby went through the most character development. She was raised by her Grandma and training. She kinda OP, but I appreciate she no longer following her Grandma blindly. (I hope the Grandma is the spy and we get a head to head with her and Webby) In the Penumbra episode Webby talks about going back to her living in the mansion, but I think this episode showed even though she's completely in her element she's no longer the same girl.

Technically, yes. In their origin comic in 1937, Della (who says she is Donald’s cousin) says that Huey, Dewey, and Louie’s father is in the hospital due to a firecracker under his chair. (It’s implied that the triplets were the troublemakers who planted said firecracker.)

There is one family tree picture where you do see his face (he appears to have red hair and a buzzcut - possibly military?), but still no name.

Don Rosa did a gag comic in the 1970’s where Daffy Duck is the dad. So, if you count that as canon, then there’s the father!

Maybe Daffy Duck has a secret red haired brother?

I dunno. I think Big City Greens earns that title. It’s the most fun, I find. I do genuinely like Amphibia as well. I likely would have enjoyed it as a kid.

DuckTales was good in the earlier days...hit or miss in S2...and it’s spiraling downwards into some mediocre episodes for S3.

DuckTales is better than Owl House, so I’ll give you that.

FOWL's actions might have more gravity if we actually knew how the missing mysteries tied into the multiverse plan, and if the agents hadn't spent so many episodes doing unrelated tasks. It really feels as though the writers are making it up as they go along.

Yeah as embarrassing as that tweet was Gos was fine. The only issue was that she came off as too old while Drake was too young, so the father/daughter bond didn't really form.

The show's terrible at familial bonds. They've had seasons to do so and yet the McDuck family still feel like a bunch of strangers living under a roof than casual blood related attachments. A hour long special wasn't enough for Nutales to even start a bond between a pair of characters that managed it within the first 15 minutes of the original's pilot. Part of the reason is the complete lack of vulnerability on Gos's part and DW's reluctance to be paternal in more than words. Hugs and physical gestures went a long way to connect the two in the DW show and small moments like the lullaby or making breakfast were the cornerstones. Gos being another Nutales tough girl didn't help and the plot had so much going on that her walls going down wasn't given enough attention for DW to work with as a parent rather than a hero. It doesn't help that sacrificing sleep doesn't hold the same impact as getting blown up by an explosion and thought to be dead. It's like they wanted that with Gos shutting off the portal, but it's still left too open ended than something she's super torn up over

There is a real fear on the D17 staff to have anyone but the boys, Donald, Scrooge, and sometimes Della be really vulnerable. Webby's whole arc is weird because she is never really in a position of emotional weakness outside of Lena's betrayal.

The thing that makes me sad about Webby is that the "joke" with her works best when she's a fish out of water, the girl that was raised to be a supersoldier superspy killing machine that has no idea how to act outside of that niche. The girl that sees Louie doing finger-neck-chop "cut it out" gestures and seriously goes "you... want me to cut this guy's throat?" and starts hesitantly but seriously lifting her weapon.

They haven't done half as much with that as they could have, and it's a shame, because it's some solid joke fuel.

No, no, they made the mistake of making Steelbeak an imbecile. Him being dumb enough to fly around in a big helicopter with FOWL on the side adds nothing.
The fact that it's one of the supposedly COMPETENT agents going "what, was I meant to use an unlabeled helicopter" is important. For all of Bradford's talk about taking things seriously and not being just a bunch of supervillains, he's totally surrounded himself with a bunch of dumbass supervillains that just can't help but go for PRESENTATION even while he's frantically waving his hands asking them to stop.

Violet's grounds Webby's outlandish views and provides Lena a rational perspective. Take for instance the Magica episode where she was the peacekeeper as she wasn't involved personally in the Magica/Webby/Lena drama while also emotionally supporting her sister's training.

In a sense she's also the normal one of the group, having a sharp mind to go along with Lena's raw magic and Webby's muscle. The theory compared to her sister's practical approach. When you throw her along with the boys she's a colder and less emotional Huey and someone his equal that can trade barbs.
