It's not for girls, but they're putting an emphasis on girl protagonists because some few years ago, these networks were getting constant flak (Mostly by people like Amid) for not having enough female directors, showrunners, or protagonists. So networks have decided to just overload their new string of greenlit projects with being girl protagonists or women showrunners.

It's part of why Disney has almost half their TVA line-up of new shows with some brown girl as the lead.

Because white people by in large are more up to date with technological trends.
White families were a lot quicker when it came to kids living on youtube or an ipad or anything that isn't a TV. So as TV ratings dropped they decided they had nothing to lose from this sort of pandering cause most of the kids watching TV are low IQ brownlets

Few reasons.
1. Manga is in a healthier state than comics, and Japan loves going to manga for adaptions, unlike the west where sure we get some comic or comic character cartoons but it's a drop in the bucket compared to what Japan does.

2. Animation is a legitimate art form and profession in Japan, it's not seen as a joke only worshiped by a few like in the US. (Of course I have to clarify not everyone in Japan likes anime of course, but overall country wise it clearly has more respect for it than the US)

3. Japan is a much more merit focused country than modern US. Diversity quotas and nepotism aren't a fraction as rampant , leading to more quality shows, which further entices new fans and helps the industry grow.

4. Japanese people are willing to buy 2-3 episodes of a show for 60-100$

I hate it when people do this. I don't care if it's a master like Richard Williams or anyone else. You shouldn't talk about art on some competitive level.

Being a master means you completed your crazy goal after a lifetime of training. Picasso was a master even though he ended his life in cubism. Glen Keane is a master even though he only excels at Disney-esque character animation and probably couldn't animate crazy mech-transformation sequences. When you create this hard line of what a master in art is, you create this rigid idea of skill level and all it does is make people feel inferior because, "Oh no, if I can't make the next Akira, my life as an artist may as well be pointless".

It's fucking stupid to think that you can't see how both something complex like Ghost in the Shell and something very simple like Gerald McBoingBoing are masterful in what they're trying to do.

It's all about money and ratings. They want to get the most audience they can and doing this apparently achieves that.
They aren't really action cartoons for girls btw, they are girl shows with action, the idea is to make a girl show that's is also appealing to boys by adding action.
(I'd argue Amphibia, Grav falls, and Star vs probably don't fall into the category of girl or boy show though)

3rd point doesnt make sense, japan is naturally less diverse than the west so it's less of an issue, and we probably need more diversity quotas so that a bunch of mediocre people cant constantly fail upwards into getting more shows just because they're the standard. The rest makes sense though.

Because cartoons aren't being made for children anymore, They're for emotionally stunted twenty-somethings. In that demographic, men are more likely to pirate all their shows (see the constant mega begging here). Women are more likely to pay for streaming services, etc. The executives look at which shows take in the most money and act accordingly

All the girls and women who watch She-Ra also have very similar personalities.

So let's take something like Primal which is watched mostly by guys and something like Batman: Animated Series which is watched mostly by men, do you think these are the same groups of men? There might be SOME overlap, but odds are, the guys who enjoy the viscera of Primal are not the same ones who enjoy the comic book storytelling of B:TAS. Only SOME of them are.

The Boys is also watched mostly by guys, but are you going to assume these are the same guys who watch DBZ? That's why limiting stuff by gender is fucking retarded. Even for their demos and age groups, a lot of these target audiences are not the same.

Fanart is also mostly done by women and almost all fanfic. There are exceptions of course, especially on 4chan, but even in real life the men I know that are into cartoons just watch them and be done with it, while the women stick to it, especially the characters, have crushes on them or become fanatical fans of pairings that become their sole hyperfixiation for years. It's baffling how bad adults are at understanding kids when they were actually kids themselves.

Nowadays I love shit like SU or even She-Ra. But holy shit did I hate anything only remotely calm or "childlike" as kid. All I watched was live action horror and all I played was action shit.
I still like that even, but it only makes up a really small percentage of the stuff I consome nowadays.

When you are a kid you are into edgy stuff or simply want serious action shit, because it excites you, while you have trouble understanding the value of series that focus emotional growth and character development or relationships (be it enemies, friends whatever). Once I reached the late teens I got way more into these types of series whereas action movies and games started to bore me. Most of them are jsut boom boom and quick movement to me now, without much of a content I consider interesting enough to stick with it. Again, I still love action, but now the characters and story/setting have to be good to make me like it, whereas as kid I could be easily satisfied with shootings and explosions.

Up to this day I think that both have some massive, but different, advantages over each other while avoiding horrible mistakes the respective other commonly does. There are a bunch of anime every year that avoid the typical pitfalls though, just as there are cartoons that avoid the western problems, but the majority is still annoying because of this. Regardless of everything, avoiding any of these types of media is dumb to me, there are always gems among the shit. In general I enjoy more anime than cartoons per year but that's simply because the mass of anime is wayyy bigger so you are way more likely to find a good new anime than a good new cartoon.

I can see both sides here. Romances are part of such movies or series like FotNS and they are actual romances, but only in-story, not shown. The active part of the romance you see on-screen is basically just the love working as a goal or price or motivation to do a thing if the love is dead. There are usually no feelings between the actual pairing involved, let alone much of a characterization of the wife/crush, they rather play the role of some holy grail or something.

It's genuinely different from the type of romances you rather see nowadays. I am not even talking about romance series, but even when you look at the romances in Steven Universe or that Transformers comic, or She-Ra/whatever they are never really the focus of the story and the stories aren't romances anyway, they are even way rather action series than romances, but the romances are presented through on-screen chemistry, whereas in the "male oriented" old stories (or however you call this) the romance is an off-screen thing, unless they show the obligatory kiss to tell you that this is a romance and it's more of a distant goal and rather shown at the beginning (if the love is lost) or the the end or both (if regained).

Though you can argue how much of this is related to man/woman and how much it is simply a result of the times. Characterization and development is way more common or focused on nowadays than decades ago. Many old cartoons were even episodical resets.

The problem with this kind of argument is that some of the more famous rom com writers such as Neil Simon are men. And some of the most famous romance stories in history (Romeo and Juliet? Any of the Grimm's Tales?) are written by men. It's the same kind of leap in logic as "women are supposed to be cooks, but men are the ones who become chefs". It's splitting hairs trying to put interests into an organized bubble.

And most of this problem stems from people trying to use MODERN DAY stories as the sole example of what genders as a whole on the planet are interested in or how they think or how they react. The romances in SU or She-Ra or Korra aren't written to cater towards women exclusively, they 're written like bad fan fics and that's why it's often a group of teens and bleeding hearts who think that Luz and Amity dancing is "beautiful" and tear up at it.

Those moments are NOT indicative of well-written romances, which are often enjoyed by everyone. Beauty and the Beast is a classic tale that anyone can enjoy, no one would ever say that type of story is something mostly women like. If that was the case, then 90's Disney renassiance was successful thanks to women since most of their stories had hard romance drive to it. But is anyone here really going to try to say that men and women don't both enjoy Tarzan?

It works better nowadays, at least for some cartoons and the better part of the anime, but in general people simply relate to the character that is mentally close to them or fights similar problems as them, regardless of the gender unless it's some of these identity fags that can only care when a character has the same hair color as them.
And the rest is sexual attraction, so it's completely normal that most adult guys are into anime that are almost always centered around girls/women or women-only while women stick to JJBA or Transformers. Relating to a character while also finding them hot is the best option anyway.

It's because boys don't care about gender representation while still being insecure. Boy shows come off as gender-neutral because they'd feel weird watching DCSHG or MLP while girls aren't stigmatised for more "masculine" shows because they're not masculine in societies eye. There's no MLP equivalent for boys except much younger kiddie shit about talking cars. Having a female lead in a narrative focussed show just brings a wider viewer base for people who do care about representation and it doesn't isolate the boy audience. It's why Kim Possible was popular. And why girls can watch transformers but guys can't watch winx club.

2. Japanese animators get paid peanuts and it's seen as smack dab between skilled and menial labor. Animation in Japan is a joke not because it's for kids but because it's for greasy losers (save feature films which are broadly popular).

3. Japan is nepotistic as fuck. The one thing it does have going for it is not knocking promising people out of the pipeline because they don't look like the boss or HR manager, which is mostly because they /do/ look like the boss or HR manager.

4. Japanese consumers actually make enough to invest in their entertainment. Wages/COL-wise, Americans on average are poor and can barely pay their bills, let alone shell out for Blu-rays. Netflix et al. happened because Napster proved that there was pent-up demand for media that Americans could never afford but were absolutely willing to steal en masse. Consumers don't pay for anything here anymore, it's all advertisers and investors. (BTW the tech industry is a massive money laundering scheme to transfer Boomer wealth without paying inheritance taxes, you heard it here first folks.)

This is why the terms Shounen and Seinen which roughly translate to "boy" and "young man" are associated to action series. Because the vast majority of action mangaka are dudes. Yeah there's a minority of female shounen and seinen authors. But even in Japan action focused series are associated and marketed too a male majority demographic. You use shonen as an example of "men liking action", and yet the men who enjoy Die Hard are NOT the same ones who enjoy shonen, because they appeal to two completely different generations of people. And the men who enjoy Die Hard most likely would not find a lot of joy in old action movies such as Them! or King Kong.

Do you really think things like Astro Boy and Lupin weren't enjoyed by both genders at the time? Unironically this though. Little boys are stigmatized to all hell by their peers for watching shit that isn't action-oriented, whether or not it has a female lead. The original PPG and Kim Possible worked well because they focused on action, kicking ass, and quick quips for the writers to enjoy more than the audience ever could. Little boys could watch them and talk about them without ridicule. Little girls aren't subjected to that double standard, and could watch whatever they want without repercussion from their peers.

I work occupational I.T. at different school districts and the shit I've seen kids destroy each other about is absurd. One of the reasons I hated Avatar is how the characters kept dodging and blocking. No one was getting hurt outside of a single specific exception (when Aang got thunder shot). Action shows where you know the action is censored is simply garbage.

Also Samurai Jack final seasons finally allowed some decent action, too bad the writing is mostly shit and frankly I don't like Genndy's art style for drama and violence. Can't really take such angular characters seriously. Western Animation is cursed with censorship, bad art styles, and political correctness to the point it's all trash.

The biggest problem is that since adults treat girls and boys differently immediately, you'd have to psychotically take large groups of babies to be raised identically by robots to find answers.

ALl this debate wouldn't even exist because all humans would be interchangable widgets with no free will or sentience.

That reality alone makes these conversations seem retarded. How do you benefit arguing against people's reality when it comes to a "soft" science like their personalities? They won't and cannot change their personalities because you feel like they should. If boys who liked shoujo shows or other boys and girls who are autistic and hate/can't talk to people but love math didn't exist, your pronouncements would make sense, but you also wouldn't have to ever have had these conversations at all. Instead, there is variety in human beings. If you eliminated all humans who weren't atypical in some areas, you would have to kill most human beings.

So let it be.

Disney has always been female focused since Snow White. They were always gay shit like that. Also they have ruined western animation with their pussy family friendly bullshit.

One other thing there's a reason male audiences prefer Looney Tunes over Disney's shit because they're more in line with having an edge. Mickey may be more whored out, but he is lame. And he has an annoying voice. Donald Duck is the closest thing Disney has to a decent universal character, but Daffy is way funnier than Donald.
