Because they don't. Fights in a comic shouldn't be RPG battles where only stats matter, it should be the characters using strategy and being clever to win. Anything else is frankly boring and as hype as stuff like 'WALLY RAN FASTER THEN EVER!' can be for some stuff it gets old pretty quickly if it's used too much

I disagree to an extent. Power levels and respective power levels are incredibly important on actually determining the strategy and wit required to make a fight interesting. Not to mention the, "He lifted something impossible to lift!" can be incredibly effective and evocative if used right.

If the Marvel Universe was all about a dead lift competition, then yeah, sure.

The problem is that 70's Savage Hulk is a relatively stupid opponent compared to say someone like Thor, who is almost as strong but is much smarter than Hulk and has all the powers of Mjölnir.

Heck, even Batman could get the upper hand on Hulk because Hulk is slow witted with low self control.

Thor back then was outright stronger than Hulk to the point that Hulk resorted to cheating or taking a hostage in an attempt to defeat Thor. Also the fact that Stan Lee created him to specifically be stronger than Hulk.

In this one for example thor agreed not to use his hammer because hulk dared him to fight without it to realy prove who is stronger.

Based. Anyone who says otherwise is objectively wrong. The basic idea of 'powerlevel' is autistic crap.
Is it entirely something Dragon Ball started? Because the inclusion of power levels just happens to coincide with the creation of every problem in the Dragon Ball universe.
The concept lends itself to power cycling which is always going to block you into a corner narratively because you're just going to have to recreate bigger threats.
Obviously you'll always have people that outclass others- The Hulk is always going to be physically able to beat the shit out of Aunt May if he really wanted to. But there shouldn't be an actual leveling scale like nerds always seem to obsess over.

Power levels are more just the quantifiable strength of various superheroes and the ability for superheroes to just... Increase their power level somehow.

Power levels are fine when there is good writing to accompany it. The modern problem is they keep making villains stronger and stronger universe ending bad guys so the ways of beating them are more and more contrived. I love a good guy as an underdog beating a bad guy when there is some decent explanation. Like Spider-Man using some scientific knowledge and the environment to beat a stronger foe. But fuck me when you have some new evil come in and beat someone up (or kill a lesser known hero) to show they mean business and then some universe ending plot that our small planet is meant to defeat? I miss the days when heroes did fight cosmic stuff but it was always framed in a certain way. Heroes lose nothing in battles anymore, no one really stays dead, there is no ongoing issues for them to deal with. It all feels redundant.

Hm. Yeah. I think strength is different, but when it's characters with superpowers, I don't think there's any reason why one superpower is less powerful than another. Like, a God-like being can be so strong punches don't effect them, I understand that. But it's always short notice so you need to give dumbass reasons why they get stronger, from 'HE GOT ANGRY' to 'THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP' to... Saiyans somehow getting infinitely stronger the more you beat them half to death.

Indeed. And just like the multiplication effect in action movies, it is hard to put the genie back in the bottle when it comes to these characters. No one wants to see them defeat a two bit punk villain when they've saved the universe. You're so close to getting it, anon. Weight classes exist-- In fighting tournaments, usually when you have to stick to specific rules. If you're just fighting dirty and not bound by a tournament there are no weight classes and there are definitely cases of people busting those outside their weight class. That's the entire reason judo exists. There are strategies people can utilize because fighting is not so cut and dry that being bigger and with more muscle always means you'll defeat another person.
If power levels existed in real life tournaments wouldn't even fucking exist because we'd know the outcome of the fights before they even happen.

These are not the same thing. A character doesn't need to be invincible in order to be too powerful for another character to beat. Captain America can do whatever he wants, he's not going to make Silver Surfer even feel pain. That doesn't mean Surfer is 100% unstoppable and can't be fought by anyone.

Personally i didn't mind power creep in Marvel as practically every hero lifts, look at the fucking Thing deadlifting tons even though he's already strong as shit. My thing is like you said when they just give them bullshit to make them stronger, its like writers don't understand that being a good hero isn't about being the strongest but the personality and integrity they have. Think back to Spider Man vs The Vulture, in his first fight he got his ass beat, and in the second encounter he didn't even dominate him he had to come up with a way to nullify the anti gravity (which could be counted as BS, but i'd give Peter a pass since all the other stuff he built at his age would be BS). Its about coming up with clever ways to overcome your opponents. Hulks suffers from not really having any inventive ways to take down opponents other that being stronger than them for the most part...

Power levels in cape comics are a range, not a threshold. Titania is much stronger than Spider-Man, but he's in the *range* of power needed to beat her. We know this, because he's beaten her. Believe it or not, talking about who could beat whom, is not actually about two people squaring off and taking turns hitting each other until one goes down.

Power creep itself isn't even really a problem in most things. This, Marvel has never been about outright beating the shit out of your opponents, but these levels give reasonable ranges as to what a hero can acheive. Like you could never write a story about DD out right beating the shit out of Namor, because the difference in strength is too vast. BUT it isn't the end all be all as you could make it a story of endurance, and maybe potentially have DD trick Namor by drying him out or some bullsthit.

Honestly Marvel should try to go back and keep things mostly separate, like even though DD, Spider Man and I guess Luke Cage/ Power Fist. patrolled New York they hardly interacted with each other and had villains of their own power scale ( to the point that some villains would shift to other series like King Pin going to DD and Sandman going to the FF).

There are some great stories where characters interacted in a good way: like Spider-Man and Juggernaut or Daredevil and the Hulk. The issue is mostly that these were perhaps better written than more modern comics.

Precisely this, i don't know if DBZ tardism thats infected people but there's more to being a hero than just brute strength. A Cap story with him against Silver Surfer would be him winning through his virtues alone and SS being impressed a (as far as he knowns) non powered human would have such bravery as to fight against a cosmic entity that completely outclasses him, and perseverance to endure despite it being so one sided. To the point it would touch at what sparks of humanity SS has in him from before he became a herald and he would switch sides to help Cap

Ozai is the most powerful firebender but could've gotten killed as early as the solar eclipse episode with Zuko's lightning redirection.

Azula is more powerful than Ty Lee and Mai but they surprise stun her in the prison episode.

Three things to remember about WWH
1. Thor was dead at the time.
2. Black Bolt was a Skrull impersonator
3, Dr Strange tried the humane option first and Banner outsmarted him, forcing him to resort to black magic and a physical confrontation.

I suppose you could say Tony's Hulkbuster being sabotaged in a 4th point, but the buster armors almost never work anyway. The point is, the guys that could normally handle the Hulk were either not available, or outfoxed. But Xavier was able to get him to stop, and Juggernaut was still a match for him, he just had to agree to be a villain again to do it, and afterwards had no reason to oppose Hulk. Also remember it wasn't just Hulk, he had an army and his own Avengers crew. So, Hulk wank from that event IS wrong, the circumstances around it means there has to be several, large asterisks along with it, but it also doesn't de-legitimize the wins he did accomplish.

It would, because Hulk has no finite element inside himself to cap how strong he can become. The more he fights, the stronger he gets. If Hulk hits someone, and they take it, that makes him mad, they're resisting "the strongest there is." If they hit him, that also makes him mad. Hulk's power is an infinite feedback loop that you have to break before it gets out of control. Some characters can do that, the vast majority can't.

When writing a story, vague power levels are alright. They help establish the stakes. Tien vs Cell is one of my favorite DBZ fights despite the fact that you could hardly call it a fight, but it's really intense and moving due to the vast difference in their power. On the other hand, in Super, when Majin Boo fights the kickboxer wolf, we don't really know their power levels. We don't know if Buu has advanced in any way since his saga, so it's hard to tell just how much of a threat the wolf guys are.

Another example I've just thought of is probability-based powers. How the hell do you take them into consideration? Say, someone like Black Cat. Her 'bad luck' has done some negligible harm to her opponents on some occasions, while nearly killing them on other ones. Really convenient if you wanna wank or lowball her. But if you try to be 'fair', how the fuck do you go about it? Do you take every instance she has ever fought anyone and come up with a comprehensive statistic on how often does her bad luck have a decisive effect on a fight? So if her bad luck is used in 57% of her fights, what the fuck does that leave you with? "It's probable that she could have a helicopter randomly drop on her enemy but not too probable"? And if a new issue comes out where she fights someone, do you have to update the statistic, potentially making her stronger or weaker based on some writer's random whim?

I would say he is a better fighter because he is more powerful physically. Tactics and weaponry come into play in battle. Oh, I see the reasoning, but Hulk consistently displays some pretty insane durability, he's one of the few things Wolverine finds difficult to cut, and he can stand up to Gladiator, who has the strength to rip apart black holes. There are some characters with vastly disparate durability, like how Wonder Woman can take hits from characters with super strength but isn't bullet proof, but writers wanting to showcase Hulk's powers tend to make him job to things he should be able to ignore, because for some reason they never figured out "give the bad guy an adamantium weapon" and bypass any continuity disputes.

The issue with power levels usually tends to be it's a senseless escalation game in which the hero wins by unlocking the next highest number on the power meter.

They were introduced to make fun of the idea of power levels. Raditz was stronger than Goku and PIccolo in an absolute sense, but he lost cause power levels don't matter. Goku was significantly weaker than Vegeta, and could only KEEP PACE using a skill that was killing his body very rapidly. Vegeta lost cause he made one very big miscalculation and a series of smaller ones. Freeza was being held off by COMPLETE WEAKLINGS despite his overt superiority. This is one reason Freeza got so fucking tilted.

I think it's writers equating muscular power with ability to achieve one's goals. Let's say you can throw fireballs without limit. How does this actually help you in a real sense? Sure if a fight breaks out, you're set, but how often is that a factor in trying to accomplish goals? Building something? Establishing something? I'm talking about trying to work towards a future. There's a lot of things you cannot accomplish no matter how hard you flex your muscles. It doesn't matter if you can atomize things in a 50 mile radius just by flexing. There's an infinite amount of other problems that can't solve.

Writers simply choose to give their stories no nuance. Nor their encounters. Even Dragon Ball gave more mind to the particulars than most stories now.

How about the fact Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma are the only reason the arc's entire purpose was successful? You know, the dragon balls? And stopping the dragon balls from falling in to the wrong hands so they could revive another set of dragon balls? How about the fact those weaklings still managed to stave off Freeza long enough for Goku to come? And managed to get Piccolo on planet to the same effect. Piccolo even helping keeping Goku alive long enough to do the spirit bomb.

Losing the fight does not mean failing one's goals. People that don't see DB has that theme woven all through it kind of piss me off, to be honest. Every single arc harps on it. It takes more than muscles to accomplish goal. Goku can win the fight, but that's all he's good for. Even he needs others. Goku even dies SEVERAL TIMES to hit home that theme.

You need to be more than physically strong to truly win.

If you think the Hulk is about power you must look deeper.

It is about anger, primate rage, losing control, antisocial behavior which lends power, power to destroy - but is good for nothing else. Everybody has a Hulk in them, but the price for unleashing it is everything else.

It's not even asserting dominance, like a gorilla might. This is abandon - no longer caring about the outcome.

And, of course, irony; the one who held such power, such monstrous, brutish destruction, was the smallish nerd-type who despised expressions of anger. All the same, that little nerd did create a weapon capable of annihilating a city.

There are insanely many angles to the story of the Hulk, and it seems you have seen none of them.

Villain introduction story arcs are always like that and make ridiculous claims. Abomination was suppose to twice as strong as Hulk too. But characters like Thor and Hercules were shown capable of easily defeating him while Hulk struggles.

Skyfather are actually about on par with a Celestial. Problem is that when and if they fight, the Celestials usually join the fight and thus outnumber the Skyfathers. That and the fact that there are some super Celestials that are more powerful than the average Celestial.

Different people have different abilities. It's pretty likely that A beats B, B beats C and C beats A. There you can't really get a power level.
You might get A in its prime could beat B but now it would be just abusive.
And you can also get people who changes strategy depending on who are they facing. There is fight IQ, and dumb people who are only strong.
Power levels are too arbitrary to be considered seriously

depending on the day, there IS a gigantic gap.
Nefaria at full power couldn't be defeated by Avengers and Thunderbolts combined efforts, Thor included.

But the Nefaria who was defeated by Carol was quite evidently much weaker. Her absorbing his energy attack and use it to power-up herself and defeat a relatively weak Nefaria is realistic.

Only if Magni inherits the Thorforce which got cultivated with Thor, Odin, Bor, and Buri's portion of the force. Default Magni is comparable to default Thor. Probably weaker in terms of overall potential due to the Elder God blood being diluted and and no longer as potent.

Magni is the God of Strength, doesn't mean that he would be stronger than Skyfather Thor. Maybe once Thor is dead and pass on the Thorforce to Magni, he would become stronger than Thor. But until then, its not happening. If you use Hercules, another God of Strength as a reference, there really isn't that much of a noticeable difference when compared to Thor. Colossus used to be listed as being able to press 70 tons, and the Thing was listed as being able to press 85 tons.
I want to say that Colossus used to be considered as even weaker than that, but I can't find the reference right now. I will agree that at times he's been a lot stronger than what's listed above.

Still weaker than the Thing though. Colossus doesn't really have any impressive feats of strength comparable to the Thing. If Hulk, Thor, Hercules, and Superman clones are the peak, Namor and Thing with be below them, and Colossus would be below Namor and Thing.
