A Goofy movie was never that great. It's a fine if very rushed 69 mins film, but hardly the underrated masterpiece everyone says it is. And yes, i'd rather watch Shark Tale over AGM ( and so would my dad, who also watched both and liked ST better, so i'm not the only one ) You got a problem with that ?

I just hate it when stuff that isn't that great gets unwarranted praise because of nostalgia or because it's hand drawn, yet stuff with plenty of merits gets shat on because of superficial nitpicks or because it's CG. I get that we're all nostalgic for that era in which theatrical 2D animation was the norm, but not everything from that era was great. Don't you think there's a reason why the general public lost interest in 2D films ?

You really think people are looking fondly back on Goofy movie specifically because of a 2d bias? May I remind you many CG films are rightly praised along side 2d films and it's because they tend to be narratively compelling along with being visually appealing. A Goofy Movie is visually charming and has a strong unique story regarding a father and his son bonding and growing to accept the growing changes of their relationship. Shark Tale is a fucking ugly mess with character designs that are disturbing, 3d models and lighting that's aged like milk. A by the numbers story about an asshole that learns to be good that's burdened by a shitty godfather parody and pop culture references that make Shrek 2 look subtle.

Too bad Goofy Movie has rushed pacing and weak dialogue. It's easy to watch a bunch of random scenes online and think the film is amazing, but watching it from start to finish makes it clear that the film doesn't fully hit the mark. There's just too many set pieces and musical numbers for a 69 min film, thus preventing the average viewer of getting invested in the conflict. Keep in mind i have zero nostalgia for the film. Watched it for the first time around 2015 and wasn't impressed

The thing that is frustrating about ST is that it could, and should, have been the start of a new era for CG animation. It was unlike any CG film released before, and even today, 16 years later, it remains a unique film. Eric Bergeron directed the film with his own traditional animation methodology, yet the negative reception it got prevented him from directing another film and prevented this methodology from becoming the norm, so the soulless footprint established by Pixar and the Shrek films ended up prevailing to this day, with newcomers like Illumination relying on it as well. Had Shark Tale been a well received film, things would be different right now. There's a reason why it lingers on the animation community and general public's memory to this day
