I don't actually think it's just straightforward inserting but I think that most authors, intentionally or unintentionally, model their characters on parts of themselves. So every character is a "self-insert" of some traits to one extent or another, even characters based on other people a writer knows is getting filtered through the writer's experiences.
With Amity, I'd guess the parts like Dana are working really, really hard to be great and being bisexual, maybe some other bits, too. But again having characters based off yourself and people you know is something nearly every author artist etc. does.
