How much of how cartoons look nowadays a matter of tightening purse strings on the behalf of the production side?

Artists are compulsive creatures. They'll do all kinds of stupid, crazy shit if you give them enough leeway. I can't help but think that the bland, samey look that everything has now is at least partly a result of pressure to lower costs.

You can cite examples like the Steven Universe crew going "It's on model as long as you recognize the character", but even then, t's not like the actual artists involved can just go "Yeah they won't let us do any retakes and want use to use basic ass everything" because their bosses can then potentially remove them from their jobs, and maybe even blacklist them. It's not like the animation industry is robust.
