Adult cartoons that abuse sex jokes and excessive violence are kind of like kids' cartoons that abuse gross-out jokes. It's fine to have them occasionally, but there needs to be a balance with smarter jokes that don't shoot so low.
This is what made The Simpsons work in the '90s and what makes BoJack Horseman work today. They don't JUST rely on emphasizing how ADULT they are. Crude jokes are paired nicely with witty dialogue or more slapstick visual gags. Someone mentioned Hoops's similarities to Duckman, and this would also explain why the latter works better. Those restrictions on Duckman's swears make it easier to enjoy his constant outbursts without getting tired of them after happening over and over again.
The people making adult cartoons need to remember that there's value in teasing the audience sometimes rather than just blurting everything out.
